UK/BC cooperation pays off Issues of educational reform continue to lead agendas globally and locally, and Douglas College is no exception. This month, the Division of Instruction, Douglas Development and a British expert in Prior Learning Assessment are teaming up to bring you news on recent applications of new educational directions here and elsewhere. VP, Instruction John McKendry spent an educational leave this summer delving into the shifts taking place in higher education in the UK. “The trip confirmed that many issues we face are common throughout the world: moving to a learner-centred model, alternative assessment methods, questions of technology and access, competitiveness, transferability, core skills and com} cies, and so on.” During his tenure at the University of Sheffield, McKendry also discovered some innovative approaches to meeting emerging challenges in post-secondary education. “I wanted to gain more insight into the Briefly Ina room filled with balloons, flowers and warm wishes, friends and colleagues of Jackie Hahn (left) gathered last month to wish her farewell on her official retirement from General Nursing. Sharing a smile with Jackie is Karen Jardine of St. Mary's Hospital. National Vocational Qualifications system and the just-published Dearing Report. The NVQ —a national occupational standards data-base in use since 1985 — gives an invaluable standard against which to develop outcomes- based curriculum. The Dearing Report has many similarities to the provincial document, Charting a New Course, but with a depth of analysis that has much to offer our strategic directions.” While at Sheffield, McKendry worked closely with Malcolm Day, an expert on the assessment of prior learning in the UR’s health care sector. Day was responsible for setting up the award- winning Sheffield and North Trent College and Employers’ NVQ Consortium, which focuses on the assessment, training, education and accreditation required for competence in particular occupational areas. Originally brought by CFCS Dean Bev Miller as a visiting scholar in 1995, Day returned in June of this year to work with Special Advisor: Learning Assessment Carol Dean's new digs Beverley Miller, Dean of Child, Family & Community Studies and Psychiatric Nursing, has moved her office. Miller can now be found in 1800C, NWC while her local — 5135 — remains the same. Ebner as an External Evaluator of the CFCS/ Psychiatric Nursing Assessment Service. He returns this month to review the implementation of the Service and consult with McKendry, Ebner and faculty on continuing and potential flexible assessment initiatives. On October 20 (noon - 2pm, Room 1630, NWC), Day and McKendry will present a Brown Bag Seminar: "Using Occupational Standards in Continuing Professional Development Programs." Ebner adds that anyone wanting more details should contact her at local 5128. “Malcolm's visit is an opportunity no-one should miss.” i DSS delivers Watch your mailbox for the new publication We All Have Different Needs: A Faculty Guide to Disabled Student Services.
