However, with the City of Coquitlam fining citizens up to $75 for ungroomed sidewalks, it is well worth the effort. Last week, Coquitlam staff began handing out tickets to houses along school routes and sent out auxiliary staff reminding residents to clear their sidewalks, or face paying a ticket. The specific bylaw is usually enforced on a complaint basis, so until now, Coquitlam has sent letters to offending properties and if a second complaint is received, then the $75 ticket is issued. Coquitlam staff are also issuing tickets and towing cars that have been abandoned in snow banks because vehicles left in the snow prevent plows from doing their job, and can put emergency services at risk. From snow to ice Sure, we all know the weather out there is frightful but it seems to have gone from bad to worse as the predicted melting of the winter wonderland has indeed occurred, leaving ice in its wake at night. Students should take all the necessary precautions, especially at the New Westminster Campus where one bad skid could send them flying down the Eighth Street hill and perhaps even into the recently-battered Salvation Army store. @ Library-to-library fundraising results According to Douglas College, the Library-to-Library fundraiser that took place before Christmas was a success, raising over $1500 for the society from book sales, collections and personal donations. All money raised will help fund community libraries in Uganda. @ Clear your clutter Douglas College is now accepting books, CDs, VHS tapes, DVDs and magazines for their annual book sale happening at the New Westminster Campus in early March. Students are asked to drop off donations in front of the performing arts office in room 3308A at the New Westminster Campus, or send them through intercampus mail to the Event office in room 3322, New Westminster Campus. @ New exhibit at gallery Starting in January, local artist Katherine Freund-Hainsworth’s exhibit Fish will be featured at the Amelia Douglas Gallery at Douglas College’s New West Campus. Fish is a paper and digital mixed media project involving the subject matter of, well, fish of course. “In this exhibition, Katherine tells the stories of fish through a variety of imagery. For example, she utilizes everyday historical moments, people and objects that involve and surround fish, the river and the sea,” said a statement from the artist. The exhibit features other works from artists Joan Barnet, Tim Nugent, and Hsiao Chen and runs from January 8" to February 26". @ Week of Welcome gets off with a hitch Douglas College’s Week of Welcome did occur last week despite heavy snowfall forcing the school to close both campuses down. They merely pushed back many of their expected events. When asked why these events could simply be put off, Kyle Baillie, manager for the Office of New Students, explained that this was not the “same as the September orientation,” but rather “this is smaller.” Thus, it was easier to push back. Hence, the mislabeled event calendars and other related materials.
