AD HATTER douglas college © Inter Office Memo Date: _January 15, 1987. To: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD From: W. L. DAY Re: _PRESIDENT'S REPORT A. External Matters - Municipal The Business Council of B.C. Committee on Business/Education Relationships is continuing its work, in exploring productive ways in which business and education can co-operate in supporting the local economy. The most recent meeting of this Committee occurred on January 6th. An action program is scheduled for Spring. I will provide more information as plans are clarified. On January 8, I attended a special celebration sponsored by the Chinese Consul in Vancouver, to both bring in the Chinese New Year, and to recognize the strong educational relationships that are developing © with China. Douglas College, Vancouver Community College, U.B.C., and SFU were the institutions invited. B. External Matters - Education Again - during the first week of January, the Council of Principals Executive met with officials of the Ministry on their regular bi-monthly information session. The Ministry of Advanced Education & Job Training has now tabled a formal reorganization, which calls for altered relationships and roles of certain key officials with whom the College does business. An organization chart of the new Ministry will be published in the MAD HATTER. The Hon. Stanley Hagen attended the meeting, in order to bring greetings and to gain a closer knowledge of the individuals involved. On January 8, the Provincial Advisory Committee on Post-Secondary Educational Use of Computers had its first meeting. As the Board knows, I have been asked to Chair this group. The Committee wil] be advising the Ministry on the resolution of certain major issues, involving capitalization and policy regarding computer use in colleges and institutes. A Douglas College committee of faculty, students and administrators has been struck to review the baseline policy document on the subject, and to develop a commentary from Douglas College to the Ministry on the same topic. I intend to use their © critique as a reference document for the Management Committee and the College Education Committee. The Board may hear more later on this topic, depending on the substance of their deliberations.
