The Library's Eleanore Nucho officially became a Canadian citizen on July 11. Eleanore later celebrated the event with a gathering of friends at her home. Wedding bells... Congratulations to Fadi Baydoun from Facilities Services, who tied the knot in his homeland of Lebanon on June 21. His wife will be joining him in Canada sometime in the next few months. Baby boom in Commerce and Business Department... Dave Waddington, Business Instructor, is the proud father of a baby girl, Michelle, who was three months premature. Michelle and mother Laura Waddington are both well. Economics Instructor Peter Kantrowitz and wife Carol now have their first child, Samuel Victor...Ray Yu, Computer Information Systems Instructor, and his wife Tender have a new baby girl, Kirsten. Farewell... Administration Receptionist Sherry Chan is leaving the College near the end of August. She has been accepted into a master's program in library, archival and information studies at UBC. Good luck, Sherry! Apples for the teachers... A group of Japanese English teachers will be arriving at the college on August 2 to brush up their English skills and learn new methods of teaching. Douglas College has had many Japanese students pass through, but never a group of teachers, so this is an exciting first. In transition... Kim Longmuir is Disabled Student Service’s new Transition Planner, replacing Wendy Keenlyside. Wendy is now at UBC as Disabled Transition Counsellor. Cakes & candles... Belated birthday wishes go to Susan Vincent and Jeff McDonald of the Public Information Office who celebrated their birthdays in July. Martha Entin of Student Services also celebrated in July - it was her 40th. August birthday wishes go to the Student Society’s Dave Seaweed (Aug. 5) and Bob Cowin, Manager of Institutional Research and Development (Aug. 14). Hellos, goodbyes... Joyce Hunter, who was away on LTD, has returned as Financial Aid Advisor. Student Services Counsellor Alena Strauss is taking a leave of absence to finish her PhD at the University of Toronto. Susan Meshwork will be filling the position in her absence. The Library’s Christine Frederick is heading north to Terrace with her partner who was offered a job at the new University of Northern British Columbia. She will be away until May of next year. Arnie cycles into the news... The Printshop’s Arnie Driver didn’t know it at the time, but a fellow of whom he asked directions while touring southern Ontario on his bike last month writes for a small newspaper in Uxbridge, Ontario. Ted Baris is the fellow’s name, and the column he wrote about his encounter with Arnie is posted outside the PIO on the news board. It’s a nice little read. Karen wins... Comptroller Karen Maynes bagged $488.60 in the Foundation's July 60/40 draw. Goodbye until September! A Briefs x Clean up Como Creek Ravine Volunteers are needed to help clean up the Como Creek Ravine on Saturday, August 20. The clean-up is being organized by the Greater Coquitlam Volunteer Centre and the Institute of Urban Ecology at Douglas College in cooperation with the City of Coquitlam Drainage Department and sponsored by the Environmental Partners Fund. It runs from 9am to 3pm. Volunteers are asked to meet on Rochester Avenue across from the public swimming pool at 9am. People should wear boots or sturdy shoes, long-sleeve shirts and long pants.
