The INside continues its series on Col- lege terms by examining administrative structure and positions. MSTAL/MOSTL: the provincial Minis- try of Skills, Training and Labour which has responsibility for B.C. public colleges; the Minister is Dan Miller. Deputy/Deputy Minister: the senior non- elected official of a ministry, appointed by the government; the Deputy Minister of Skills and Training is Gary Wouters. Assistant Deputy Minister/ADM: senior career public servant in a ministry. Division: the largest administrative group- ing within the College. At Douglas College there are six divisions: Academic, Applied, Educational and Student Serv- ices, Community Programs and Services, Human Resources and College Develop- ment, and Administrative Services. Each division is headed by a dean, except Ad- ministrative Services, which is headed by the Bursar. Department: each division is sub-divided into departments specializing in specific services or subject areas. For example, the Academic Division includes a Mathemat- ics and Science Department. Chair/Director: each instructional depart- ment is headed by a chair or a director. Chairs are elected to three-year terms and head academic departments. Directors are hired to lead applied program departments and some service departments on a perma- nent basis. Applied/Academic Programs: applied programs provide training and education which qualify students for employment in a specific field (e.g. Nursing, Child and Youth Care Counsellor). Academic pro- grams provide education for transfer to university in areas such as arts and sci- ences. Disciplines: each faculty department is sub-divided into disciplines focusing on specific subject matters. For example, biol- ogy, geology and chemistry are all disciplines within the Mathematics and Science Department. Speak continued on page 5
