EILEEN DAILLY susJect MARINE TRAINING FACILITY PATE DECEMBER 9, 1974 RELEASE NO. 497_7y eee een ee Te IMMEDIATE A marine training facility to meet the manpower requirements of ' Canada's west coast shipping industry has been recommended by an advisory committee to the Minister of Education, it was announced today by the Hon. Eileen Dailly. The committee recommended that the training school be established on a waterfront location in the Greater Vancouver area and be operated by a board of governors responding to the Minister of Education. It would be independent of any existing college. Mrs. Dailly said the recommendations would be ccnsidered by her Department and then taken to the Cabinet before negotiatiors were begun with the Federal Government, which would be involved because of Ottawa’s direct concern with maritime matters and its participation in manpower training. Tne advisory committee recommended that cperating costs and capital funding be provided by both levels of Government, The report said the need for such a training facility was apparent because of the great need for more Licensed personnel and the fact that the Federal Ministry of Transport's certification requirements are rising. The committee suggested that a comprehensive facility be planned and developed as quickly as possible, Some marine training is now given at the Vancouver Vocaticnal Institute, as well as at Victoria's Camosun College and the British Columbia Voentional School in Terrace. The advisory committee was under the chairmanship of Dr. J.F. Newberry, the Department of Education's Assistant Superintendent of Poct- Secondary Educational Programs.
