Join Amelia for June art show You may have found it in an outdoor market in Thailand, in a tiny gallery in St. Petersburg, or in a corner of your grandmother’s attic. It might be large or small, old or new. Wherever you got it and whatever form it takes, it’s a piece of art that you love. And for its next Amelia Douglas Gallery exhibition, the Douglas College Art Committee wants to know all about it. Entitled Public and Private Collections, the show planned for June 9- 30 will feature an eclectic mix of art belonging to the College and to College employees. “At past shows, people have shown a lot of enthusiasm about the history of the work, and about the art they have themselves,” says show curator Lorna McCallum. “This time, we want to let everyone participate in the show itself.” All College employees are encouraged to get involved by submitting a description of an original piece from their own collections. The work might be a painting, a sculpture or a mixed-media piece—the show is open to a range of art forms. While a photo of the piece would be appreciated, those interested should send at least a written description to McCallum (c/o the Faculty of Language, Literature and Performing Arts) by May 15. Later in May, Art Committee members will approach the owners of each chosen work to describe who created it, how it was acquired and what the piece means to them. “There’s always a public and a private side to art,” says McCallum. “And that includes the College’s own collection. We want to explore that theme, and generally share the enjoyment of art around the College.” She adds that the show will also allow past and present Art Committee members to share anecdotes and memories they have gathered over the years. In addition to McCallum, current Art Committee members are: Eleanore Nucho (Chair), Christine Dewar, Linda Moncur, Jan Farrell, Steve Mainprize, Bob Nicholls, Marty Sulek, Ulrike Ebeling, Pat Thomasson and Natasha Davidson. To show appreciation for the hard work everyone has done to support the Gallery, the entire College will be invited to an opening celebration — stay tuned for details. §f May farewells @ You're invited to come say cheerio to Shelagh Armour-Godbolt of the Home Support Attendant Program, who has decided to take up full-time residence at her home on Vancouver Island.
