Canucks Corner Stephanie Smith, OP Sports Editor ‘ie Canucks and the Wild went into overtime on February 14. Again. And you know what? This doesn’t bug me, because I know that the Canucks, in OT, will come away with two points. Sami Salo did it, again, last night scoring a beautiful goal to wrap the game up and take home the win. The Canucks have settled nine games this season in overtime, and have been successful eight of those times. Sami Salo especially has been excellent. On February 14, he scored his third overtime goal, which is just one goal shy of a league record held by five players, including teammate Markus Naslund. Why is this though? Why are the Canucks so good in overtime? Is it because they have more room to play that wide open style of hockey that they love? Is it because they are a quick skating team with good puck possession? Is it both of these things? Whatever the case, as long as they keep it up, I am not worried. I do however wish they could get the job done in regulation time, and stop putting points into the division, but as long as they come away with the two points, I can’t complain too much. Last week I wrote about consistency. About how the Canucks can beat the best teams in spectacular fashion, and yet blow it against a bottom feeder team like Chicago. Since then they have only played twice, but they won both those games. They narrowly avoided disaster against the Thrashers, beating them 3-2 and then there was the aforementioned overtime win against the Wild. So if they can keep this up, they’ll be fine. But they have a game against the Blackhawks again on the 16th, so we’ll have to wait and see. They could do one of two things; atone for their sins and blow out the Blackhawks, or settle for a repeat and be embarrassed by them. The latter would of course, just prove what I said last week, that the Canucks are consistently inconsistent. But as always I would like them to prove me wrong. I would like them to pull off the win and show that they aren’t just going to sit back during a game that should be an easy win. They even against teams that are sitting near the bottom, that they can bring a good game to the table and take a win from it. Here’s hoping.
