Event magazine is pleased to congratulate Kanina Dawson of Halifax, Nova Scotia, whose creative non- fiction piece The End of August, first published in Event 31/2, won this year’s Western Magazine Award in the Human Experience category, and was a finalist for the National Magazine Award in Personal Journalism. We also congratulate Tim Mitchell, whose short story Night Finds Us, first published in Event 31/3, has been shortlisted for this year’s $10,000 Journey Prize, and Elisabeth Harvor, whose short story One Whole Hour (or even more) with Proust and Novocaine, first published in Event 31/ 2, has been selected for this year’s Best Canadian Stories anthology, published by Oberon Press. * Congratulations to Rosemary Burgess of ASE for winning gold asa member of the Dogwood Seniors Nothin’ Dragon of Coquitlam ina dragon boat race held in Kent, Washington. Her team also captured silver in the Alcan Dragon Boat Festival held in Vancouver. * CFCS Dean Jan Lindsay is extremely proud to announce that Lori Woods, Richard Norman and Wilma McCrossan were nominated fora BC Innovation Award for their work on an on-line prior learning assessment and recognition project and have each received a Certificate of Recognition. Congratulations, Loni, Richard and Wilma! * Congratulations to May’s 50/50 Employee Lottery winner, Gary Tennant, an instructor in CFCS. Gary takes home $728 and student aid increases by the same amount. June’s 50/50 Winner is Darlene Kress of Science and Technology. Darlene takes home $709 and student aid increases by $709. Kudos to Biology Lab Technician Supervisor Myrta Hayes and Allen Billy (on leave) of the Biology Department for getting an article published that describes a best- practices approach to developing computer- based curriculum and instruction. Their article entitled Web-based Modules Designed to Address Learning Bottlenecks in Introductory Anatomy and Physiology appeared in the Interactive Multimedia Electronic Journal of Computer-Enhanced Learning (IME}), published by Wake Forest University, North Carolina. Check it out at imej.wfu.edu/ articles/2003/1/02/ index.asp. A book co-authored by Cindy Hansen, geology lab technician, was released at the May conference of the Geological Association of Canada. Geology Tours of Jancouver’s Buildings and Monuments is organized into six tours and highlights 60 local buildings and monuments, including the Sun Tower and Carnegie Centre. The book is on display at the New Westminster Campus bookstore. Psychology Instructor Bruce Landon hada chapter entitled Hard Choices for Individual Situations published in Blended Learning: An Ongoing Process for Internet Integration (page 197 to 218) edited by D. French, N. Olrech, C. Johnson, & C. Hale published by e- Linkages, Inc. in cooperation with Trafford Publishing. Bob Nicholls of the Philosophy and Humanities Department recently completed a paper entitled Zarathustra’ Love which was presented at a conference held at Brock University in June. The paper will be published as part of the Festschrift containing the conference proceedings. Douglas College Academic Advisors Shahnaz Darayan, Anne Dijk, Moneca Faircrest, Drena McCormack, Arlene Patko and Mary Whorley attended the BC Academic Advisors Conference recently. Mary Whorley gave a presentation on Degree Audit, a topic of great interest in advising. The Registrars’ Office recently implemented the Degree Audit option of Banner for graduation evaluation. Anne Dijk was elected Vice President of the BC Advising Association Executive for 2003/2004. Silvia Wilson, the Coordinator of the Home Support/Resident Care Attendant Program, isa proud new mom! Ariana Mae was born on May 31, weighing seven pounds, 14 ounces. Silvia is off until January 2004 and Ariana and Silvia are going to Buenos Aires (Silvia’s birthplace) in November to visit all those aunts and uncles who can’t wait to meet her. Gracias for all the love and well wishes from faculty and staff. * Tim Paul of CEIT and partner Lani Hyde of ESL and their toddler Ben have a welcome new addition to their family — baby Michael Paul, born July 19. Tim says the baby is “cute as a button” and weighed in at eight pounds and three ounces. * Two of the PNUR faculty have made additions to their families this summer. Ingrid Currey and Anna Jajic have both brought baby Labradoodle puppies home as new members to their families. James W. Davies, PhD, who taught philosophy at Douglas College for 22 years, passed away on July 9 at the age of 72. He is fondly remembered by his wife and family. This award goes to an academic public service librarian, or team of librarians, whose outstanding service has made a real difference to students, faculty or colleagues in BC. The award ceremony was held at the BC Library Conference in Harrison Hot Springs. Christian received this award for his project Journal Titles @ the Library. This project also garnered the Canadian Library Association CTCL Innovation Award sponsored by Micromedia/ Proquest. The award ceremony took place at the American Library Association Conference in Toronto in June anda surprise cheque for $1,000 for the library was handed over as well! The Library is also proud to announce that Instructional Services Librarian Sandra Hochstein presented her paper You Mean You Teach? I Thought You Were A Librarian! at two prestigious library conferences in May 2003. First at the 31“ National Library Orientation Exchange (LOEX) Conference in Madison, Wisconsin and second at the Workshop in Library Use (WILU) 2003 Conference in Windsor, Ontario. PsycArticles is an on-line database of full-text articles from peer-reviewed journals published by the American Psychological Association from 1988 to the present. It will be widely used by students and faculty in Psychology, Criminology, Health Sciences, Child, Family and Community Studies, Sport Science and more. As with all of the Library’s on-line resources, PsycArticles is available to an unlimited number of users, 24 hours a day. He replaces Leonardo Castro, who has moved to Database Administrator/ Programmer position. In the Office of the Registrar, Jessy Kainth moves from sub to regular as Admissions Officer. The CMO is doing the office shuffle. Chris Munroe, who has been the Layout Technician/Direct Mail Accounts Co-ordinator for the past few months, is moving to the position of Marketing Coordinator to cover for Bruce Livingstone, who will be covering for Laurie Drukier, the Production Supervisor, when she goes on maternity leave on September.
