nics, small engine and automotive mechanics, and electrical.

The Government of Indonesia supplied the site, buildings, services, staff
as well as housing and most services for the Canadian advisors.

The Canadian Government through CIDA supplied the technical : instructor ad-

visors, curriculum guidance, identification of equipment need s and supply
of $2,000,000 of equipment through a 50 year loan agreement.

PHASE IL

Development of the school is expected to span four years to December 1985.
The programs selected will train workers for secondary industrial pro-
cessing of the hardwoods, largely Meranti commonly called Phil iphine
Mahogany. As can be seen from the list of experts required the principal
need is for those who maintain sawmills, Plywood, ‘and similar manufactur-
ing plants. The Canadian experts will advise on the content of curricula,
assist in the Preparation of teaching aids and will coach counter part
Indonesian instructors in the technical skills and knowledge of the trade
as well as the most effective methods of instruction. Duties will also
include planning for courses, shop organization, final equipment purchasing,

and assessment.

 

The Curriculum/Instructor Training expert will assist in the establishment
of a Curriculum and Instructor Training Center to serve as a resource, not
only for those immediately involved at Samarinda but for those preparing
to instruct in other schools.

 

The supplementary expects” will be employed as needs dictate to follow the
first assignees on completion of the first two years; to provide upgrading
af instructors in Phase I courses; or perhaps to provide some specific trade
exper ise. Expected time for assignments in this group may range from three

to six months or in some cases to one year.

Language

The Ministry will strive to provide Indonesian lanquace training to experts
and family members in the first month of residence in Samarinda. Details are
net yet finalized.

Housing

Eight houses of a style known as Type B, designed for senior government
officials, have been Provided on the city outskirts. ‘These will be avail-
able rent free to the Canadian team with most w ies provided. Most.

Canadians choose to employ domestic help available at a reasonable rate.
Some difficulties are experienced at present with inadequate water supplies.

  

Transport

By the contract between CIDA and Indonesia experts are to be su upplied with
a project vehicle. This is a requirement since the school is located on
the opposite side of Samarinda some four miles distant.
