INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / JANUARY 30, 1990 * ‘ WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Douglas Women’s basketball team split a pair of league games at ' home the weekend of January 19- 21. Friday night Royals were in a see-saw battle with first place Malaspina. After leading at the half 29-27, Royals offence sputtered along with the defensive rebound- ing, to allow Malaspina a 64-56 vic- tory. Crystal Caldwell led with 19 points followed by Melissa Wilkin- son with 11 points. On Saturday the Royals faced off against a large and aggressive Cariboo team. Everytime Royals opened a lead, Cariboo kept com- ing back with three point shots or from the foul line. By half-time the Royals had built a 6 pt. lead 44-38, but quickly let Cariboo back in the game before pulling ahead again 40- 49. Royals had not learned their les- son from the first half, and continued to send Cariboo to the line, allowing them to come back to within 3 with 10 seconds left. Royals denied the 3 point shot, al- lowing Cariboo a 2 pointer with under 5 seconds to play. Royals held the ball out of bounds to run out the clock and defeat Cariboo 68- 67. Top scorers for Douglas were Lorraine Denis with 27 points and Crystal Caldwell with 21 points. MEN’S BASKETBALL On Thursday Jan. 18 Douglas College beat Trinity Western University (ranked 4th in CCAA) 83-75. At half-time the score was TWU 43, Douglas 29. Douglas had a great second half coming back from a 14 point deficit. Top scorer was Fred Appolinario with 23 points and he also added 5 assists. Dave Gill and Ted Vanderwall both added 16 points. Friday, Jan. 19 the Royals played Malaspina at home. The half-time score had Douglas ahead 44-29 with the final score being 83- Athletics Update 77 in favour of Douglas. Dave Gill netted 24 points and 4 assists while Rory Brown added 16 points. Saturday, Jan. 20 the Royals played Cariboo College, at’ home once Half-time score was 40- 32 for Douglas and they held the lead to win a close 67-66. Taras Mas- lechko made a last second despera- tion shot for the ’s win. Rory Brown had 17 points and Ted Vanderwal added 12 points. Douglas College men currently sit in second spot in the BCCAA standing with a 3-0 record. TWu are first with a 4-1 record. BADMINTON Following are the results of the Cariboo tournament: 1. C.B.C. 0 Cariboo College hosted the 3rd tournament of the badminton season, in which Douglas College finished in first place with a perfect 5-0 record. The Douglas team put On quite a show by winning 24 out of 25 matches in the team event. The result puts Douglas College in first place overall with a 4 point lead over V.C.C. In the team event Douglas was led by Sian Deng, Kel- ley Wong, and rookies Trish Schell, Sharon Halpin and Mike Boyd, all finishing with 5-0 records. Peter Chen and Darrin also finished with perfect 4-0 records. The second half of the tourna- ment was the individual event where Douglas College again led the way winning 4 out of the 5 events. WRESTLING At the Highline Community College on January 20 the Douglas College team tied Lower Columbia C.C. 27-27, defeated Clackamas C.C. 29-27, defeated Yakima Valley 27-22 and Big Bend C.C. 29-15.
