INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / FEBRUARY 21, 1989 Athletic Update WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: The Women's Basketball team met the women of VCC for a long- awaited rematch at Douglas Col- lege on February 10, At their last meeting, VCC defeated Douglas by a mere two points, and to date that is the only league game Douglas has lost, so they were prepared for a tough game. In the first half, Douglas faced a tough offense and were down by cight points by the end of the first 20 minutes (VCC 33, DC 25). But this did not dis- courage them. In the second half, the team goly it together and dominated with their unstoppable offense and solid defense outscor- ing VCC by 16 points. The game ended with a final socre of 71-63, putting Douglas College Women on a four-game winning streak. The high scorers were Andrea Jack- son with 17 points, Claudia Zamprogno with 16 points, and Ethel Atte with 14 points, three of which were three-pointers. The Women’s team are currently ranked #1 in their league and #5 in Canada. MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Royals dropped a big game to VCC 94-79 last Friday night, in spite of home court advantage. Glen Cote socred 19 points and Phil Tapley had 16, On Saturday night, the Royals beat Capilano College 86- 83 in overtime. Glen Cote scored a big 31 points as the team persisted in just playing well enough to win. They have only three games remain- ing before the provincial champion- ships. Watch for the play-off March 3 & 4. INTERNATIONAL MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: UBC Men’s Volleyball Team lost the match to Sung Kyun Kwan University in three straight games played at Douglas College on February 10. The Korean team from Seoul has been touring BC. and Alberta since February 3, as part of an exchange program with UBC. Many thanks to Tad Hosoi from International Education for acting as M.C. and to Dean Gordon Gilgan for repre- senting the administration at both the match and the reception. MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Tourma- ment #4 - Saturday, February 11 at TWU: Douglas vs. TWU: Final score, 2-1 for Douglas (8-15, 15-9, 15-8). Douglas vs. Royal Roads: Final score, 2-0 for D.C. (15-10, 15-3). Douglas vs. Selkirk College: Final Score, 2-1 for Selkirk (14-16, 15-4, 12-15). The men finish league play in 3rd spot behind VCC and Selkirk. Provincial Championships will be held at TWU on March 4. HOCKEY: The Royals downed TWU 10-2 in Aldergrove with a lot of help from Steve Adrain, who scored one goal and assisted on four others. Assistant Captain, Glen Bulawka, scored two goals, as did Frank Pakozdy. Singles were from Marc Thiffault, Scott Dunbar, Pat Mangold, Russell LaPoint, and Ryan Curtis. CURLING: Shirley McKendry has generously volunteered to coach the Men’s Curling team as they make a bid for the Provincial Championships in Kamloops March 3 & 4. As a former member of a World Championship team, Shirley will be able to provide first- class coaching for this young team. Good luck!
