That’s the basic plan Douglas College is following as it works with school districts and community partners to develop the 30" Anniversary Open House, running November 3-4 at the New Westminster Campus. “School districts are dealing with limited travel budgets and have many students concerned about missing classroom time. The result is everybody is very selective when assessing the value of field trips,” says Brad Barber of the 30" Anniversary Steering Committee. “It’s important to offer an Open House that’s fun and inspirational, but one that also gives visitors the opportunity to meet faculty and college students and get straight answers about their post-secondary options.” As a result, the Open House will include an Exploration Fair on Friday, November 3 featuring dozens of 30- minute information sessions. Each session allows visitors to learn about programs in their field of interest while And the survey says... We'd like to thank everyone who filled out the INside survey in October 1999. The results have been collected, and here are the highlights. Of 157 respondents, there were 60 faculty, 85 staff, 1 Board member and 11 “other” (excluded employees, etc). The majority (56 percent) skim the INside every month, and 80 percent are satisfied with the content of the newsletter. The majority of readers want more “people” news, focusing on personal, employee-life and achievement stories, as well as more information from departments in the College, mainly around teaching and learning issues and the ongoing work of the College. As one person remarked, “Increased awareness is always welcome!” We agree, and every effort is made to write articles that reflect what is happening at the College. If you have a teaching and learning, ongoing work or employee achievement story idea that hasn't received any newsletter coverage, please let us know! Briefly Joy’s a winner! Marilyn Oliver of the Registrar’s Office advises faculty members benefit by having an opportunity to showcase their programs to prospective students. To accommodate this event and allow instructors and students to get involved, regular classes at all campuses will not be held from 8am-4pm on November 3. “The Exploration Fair hours were based on lessons learned at the 1997 event in Coquitlam, when we had thousands of school-aged visitors from 9am-3pm but very few people between 4pm-6pm,” says Barber. “Programs which want to reach out to mature students, however, will have the opportunity of offering sessions in the evening or on Saturday while other Open House activities will be going on.” To help you get ready, Douglas Development is preparing to offer special sessions to stimulate ideas for successful information sessions, program displays or special student projects for the fall semester. There will also be Open House bulletins and information updates throughout the year. Many readers mentioned that they don’t like the “superficial coverage” of information in the INside, that they “like the old eight page version better” and they “want breaking news.” These are all valid points, and require some explanation. First, the INside went from eight pages to the present format during a period of cutbacks because of the costs associated with paper, ink and production time. We now produce a double issue of the INside (equivalent to the old format) during the more news-intensive times of the year. Second, the INside is meant to flag College issues, let people know where to get more information, and provide highlights of College issues and events. We print as much timely news as possible in the INside, but time and space restrictions often mean that we can't print all of the news all of the time. So what’s our solution to get you the news you want? We're in the process of creating a News and Events page on the College Web site that contains recent and back issues of press releases and public service announcements as well as highlights from the INside.
