INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / MAY 1, 1990 Athletic Update byBetty Lou Hayes Banquet honours athletes Another year has come to a close and we celebrated by honouring the athletes at a banquet recently. Master of Ceremonies, Chris Johnson, welcomed board members Myrna Popove, Dr. Pauline Hughes, John Banks, Abie Klassen and their guests without subjecting them to any of the more entertaining stories which were used on Deans Gordon Gilgan and Al Atkinson. Bill Day and wife Joan also managed to escape Chris’ outrageous anecdotes, but P.E. faculty Gert Van Niekerk, Robin Ryan, Alan Chin, Tim Frick and their guests were not so lucky. I was pleased to have Andy and Helen Andrews join us as well. The Andrews have been friends of Athletics since the early days (for me) at Winslow and could tell us a few wild stories about M.C. Chris Johnson, I would imagine. Volunteers for the function were few and far be- tween, but Jan Gara and Carmen Mahood saved the rest of you from my begging and pleading by donat- ing their time behind the bar. Merrilyn Houlihan, un- flinchingly, spent her whole evening making certain everything was smooth sailing. Thanks to all of you! Much of the food was donated by Albion Fisheries, Westside Meat and Neptune Foods. Thanks to the ICL staff for the preparations. A list of the award winners follows. If you have one of these student-athletes in your class, you have an exceptional individual with whom to work.
