With computers a fixture in more and more schools, including elementary schools, children of both sexes will grow up accepting computers in their lives the way they accept Dick, Jane, and Spot... "There certainly was a lot of boys-use-machines-and-girl s-play- with-dolls at one time," Effros says, "but I don't think parents are doing that to their kids any more." Parents ask him for prograns for their children regardless of sex, and the kids are responding: "I'm seeing as many young girls interested in computers as I'm seeing young boys." Effros even identifies age 15 as a kind of threshold: girls who are now under 15, he believes, will have grown up without computer anxiety and will face minimal job discrimination in data processing as adults. Anderson suggests that the crucial factor is for computers to be inade available to children as early and often ... All the research indicates that boys and girls are equally ' able to understand computer programs,” says Anderson. "To the extent that women are underutilized in the computer industry, these findings may help to counteract misconceptions of their abilities." ..-4s greater numbers of people enter the field for money rather than love, a more personal touch will be needed to develop software that is more than one computer science graduate talking to another, a situation that Jordan describes as a major frustration among computer executives and educators. She cites one expert who declares that “the much talked-about software crisis is due mainly to prograimers' personality defects." It's interesting to speculate on whether women are now being recruited in part to "humanize" data processing or perhaps whether their ever increasing numbers in the field are helping to bring about a Mad Hatter Page 22 natural evolution--and eventual revolution--in software.
