EEEEEEEEEE TEES EE CEE EEE EE EL EL EL EL EL ELEC ESE LES EL EE ELEC ELE EEEEEEE DOUGLAS COLLECE LIBRARY ARCHIVES Emergency Resolution from Education Panel WHEREAS the NDP strongly Supports democratic, decision-making at all levels of the educational system, and WHEREAS students, faculty, non-academic employees and the constituent community are the groups directly affected by decisions made at educational institutions and must be the people who make these decisions, and WHERDAS the “Working Paper on University Governance in B,C, Preparec by the Committee on University Governance chaired by John Bremer expressly contradicts this policy, in recommending 'the exclusion of Students, faculty, and non- academic staff from university Boards of Governors, the exclusion of any community representation on university Senates, and generally fails to recommend any meaningful change in the present undemocratic, archaic methods of university governance; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT this Convention go on record aS strongly opposing the recommendations of the Working Paper of the Bremer Committee on University Governance, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT we again go on record as Supporting party policy calling for democratic governance of educational institutions, and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT this convention direct the NDP Standing Committee on Education to prepare a brief for presentation to the Committee, and to the Minister, reiter- ating party policy and outlining in detail our opposition to this Working Paper. Class Size Whereas there is clear evidence that the quality of edu- cation is improved when class sizes are reduced and, Whereas B.C. schools have the worst student teacher ratio in Canada, Therefore Be It Resolved that the provincial government act to reduce class size in B. C. in accordance with the available evidence, and that a priority in such reductions in class size can be tied to improved teaching and learn- ing performance, Be it Further Resolved that the provincial government place the improvement of student-teacher ratios as the highest priority of the educational program.
