2 Census continued from page | to know where we stand now before we plan where we are going. “After we get the results of the census. the committee will not be setting any specific targets or deadlines. Instead we will make recommendations such as what can be done to remove inadvertent job barners or the need to use a wider range of advertising to reach specific target groups.” said Ashcroft. The committee also affirms that qualifications and appropriate skill sets must continue to be the selection criteria for hiring or advancement of Douglas College employees. Ashcroft said this principle should allay concerns about hiring practices and quotas which sometime arise when equity issues are proposed. "T haven't heard any talk about those issues around the College but this is a topic which is important to discuss because I am sure there are some people with concems about it.” she said. The census itself is confidential and will break down data into various employee categones. This will enable the committee to determine which categones and departments warrant review. Although equity planning in educational institutions is not required by government, many other B.C. universities and colleges are already establishing policies on their own. Manan Exmann, the committee's Personnel representative, says it’s an idea which serves both the institutions and the community. “We live in a multicultural country which respects people of various backgrounds and abilities. There is much to be gained from bringing a broad representation of people from various backgrounds and experiences into the workplace. Not to do this would be to miss a wealth of information."
