APGS §=ad §=ENGEPHOINMenG They re Crafty And They're Just My Type Stephanie Or, OP Contributor SEAMR IPPERS CRAFT COLLECTIVE ou know what I miss? I miss art Y class. ’'m talking about the cut- and-paste kind of art class—involving white glue, glitter, scrap paper, doilies, maybe even a pair of safety scissors. At Seamrippers, I think I may have found what I’ve been looking for, and more! Seamrippers is a craft collective located near the Gastown area (436 West Pender). Just look for the Pepto Bismol-pink doors. After descending a wooden staircase down to the studio, you'll find a screen-printing studio, sewing equipment galore, a craft library, knitting and needlework supplies, bookmaking materials, and a large cutting table. Recently, the collective saved enough money for a new wall and held a party in its, honour. Seamrippers offers more than just a means to the art of craft. It also offers a place for you to showcase your art. The collective describes itself as a, “studio/resource facility, gallery and host- ing space,” and they offer a three-level membership program (more information available on their website: Wwww.seamrippers.ca). There are a variety of unique and enter- taining opportunities at Seamrippers, like the knitting socials on Sunday evenings, or the series of “ESL through craft” classes. 14 | www.theotherpress.ca * This late winter/early spring, Seamrippers is also offering craft workshops ranging from “Underwear Making” to “D.LY. Kink” to “Experimental Knitting.’ The Experimental Knitting class utilizes alter- native materials like old t-shirts and plastic bags. If crafting isn’t your thing—you can always attend one of their art shows/ par- ties. The art is unpretentious and refreshing, and unlike the usual gallery rules, everything is hands on. So forget the no-touching rule, at Seamrippers it’s highly encouraged! At the Se/f Love: Not Just a Hobby show | attended, there were all kinds of quirky pieces worth touching—like a doll stuffed within doll, and a pop-up book filled with images corresponding to clichéd “Dear Diary” moments (appropriately named, “Dear Diary’). And perhaps most importantly, the music is fantastic (playing the likes of The Arcade Fire, Bowie, The Rapture, and even some not-so-good music 4 la Justin Timberlake). Hey, there are also free baked goods, cheap booze, and a room full of beautiful, friendly people. Sorry—no safety scissors, though. Seamrippers will be hosting a Doll Show and Workshop Calendar Release Party on April 2. au National Défense Defence nationale Great opportunities make all the difference Your college education can be your ticket to an exciting career with a difference in the Canadian Forces!
