Sports Shorts Cont. Women's Basketball Team Douglas College Women’s Bas- ketball team opened their season on Saturday Oct. 9th with a pair of wins against Grad teams from the ‘80’s and ‘90's. In the first game against the ‘80’s grads, Douglas started slowly trailing 15-7 as they had some trouble finding their shdoting range. By halftime Douglas caught up and led 31-27. All Royals scored as they controlled the second half, winning 58-47. Robyn Knight led Douglas with 10 pts and former Royal All Canadian Andrea Jackson led the 80’s grads with 13. In the second game, Douglas again started slowly trailing 15-8, but had a 14-0 run to end the half ahead 43- 33. Douglas controlled the 90’s grads in the second half, and coasted to a 77- 58 win. Tracy Cavanagh led Douglas with 12 pts while Lana Evdokimenko had 10 for the 90’s grads. Royals newcomers Janice MacKintosh, Joanne Blesch and Tania Penafiel all had strong perform- ances. Douglas faced their 1st College competition Saturday Oct. 23 against Everett CC. Douglas dominated from the start on offense, while Everett started slowly. Douglas led early 15-2 but Everett got on track in the 2nd half and stayed close before Douglas’s late 8-2 run to put the game away 79-56. Mens Basketball Team Starting Off Slow It was a tough weekend for the men’s basketball club team as they played two heated scrimmages against SFU on Friday and UBC on Saturday morning, as well as scrimmaging against the Douglas College Alumni Saturday evening. The club fell behind early in the contest, but were able to cut the lead near the end of the first half. In the second half, the Alumni cruised to the 67-60 victory. The Douglas Basket- ball Club was led by Vern Knopp with 14 pts and 13 rebounds. Tyler Runquist led the Alumni with 17 points. Fatigue after playing their third scrimmage in 24 hours played a major role in the clubs loss. The club also lost the services of Matt Holford and Chad Caldwell for an indefinite period of time. Holford injured his knee against SFU, and Caldwell injured his ankle against the Alumni. DC Golf Team Wins BCCAA Championship Title The third tournament of the BCCAA Golf Championships was conducted at Rivershore and Eagle Point golf course. in Kamloops, Oct.2-3. Cariboo College led the field with the team aggregate of 232 at Rivershore on Saturday followed by FVC - 235, Douglas - 243, and Malaspina- 248. However Douglas bounced back at Eagle Point on Sunday leading the pack with an aggregate on 239 followed by Cariboo - 241, FVC- 250, and Malaspina - 252. The individual aggregate winner for the weekend was Chad Belbin of Cariboo ‘ with scores of 71 and 75. Mike Townsend was low man for Douglas with scores of 78 and 78. Douglas still leads the overall aggregate by 27 strokes over FVC. The fourth and final BCCAA Golf Tournament was conducted at the Morningstar and Fairwinds golf courses in Parkville on Oct. 9th and 10th. Douglas College had an aggregate lead of 27 strokes over Fraser Valley College going into the tournament. On Saturday DC had its worst day that coach Gert VanNiekerk could remember and trailed UCFV by 10 strokes. The scores for DC that counted for the aggregate were: Dave Townsend - 80 Steve Haldane - 82 Mike Longridge - 84 However, Douglas still held a 17 stroke lead over UCFV going into the final round at Fairwinds. On Sunday Douglas beat UCFV by 7 strokes to win the BCCAA Championships for the third straight year by a margin of 24 strokes Douglas College's Men's Royal Classic basketball tournament Took place on OCT.14-16.
