a a PE SES ae SEES, Royals impress in invitational meet Douglas College wrestlers got an international workout on November 26 and demonstrated they’ ve got some world-class style. The Royals wrestling team placed third behind strong teams from Russia and Korea at a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Invitational tournament in Everett, Wash. Five Douglas College wrestlers earned third-place finishes at the 12-team event, enabling their team to place ahead of squads from Simon Fraser, Central Washington and Pacific Universities. The quintet featured Johnathan Castenetto (48 kg), Ryan White (82 kg), Gen Matsumoto (90 kg), Dave Garvin (100 kg) and Yogi Johl (130 kg). Douglas College completed the tournament with 20 points, while Russia’s Mindiashivilli Wrestling Club earned 57 and the Korean National University for Physical Education had 27. In other sports, the women’s basketball team is enjoying some early- season success as the Royals lead the B.C. Colleges Athletic Association with a 4-2 record under first-year coach Allison Gill. The team was also seventh in the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association national rankings at the end of November. In men’s basketball, the Royals hold second spot in their 10-team division but on November 25 were forced to swallow a 73-59 loss to Malaspina, the team which defeated them in last season’s national championship final. Douglas College rebounded the next night by defeating Langara 73-62. The men’s volleyball squad occupies the fifth-place spot in its nine-team division, but also holds an undefeated 4-0 record while most of its rivals have already played four to six more games than the Royals. The women’s volleyball team is third with a 6-2 record. Division- leading Okanagan University College is perfect at 12-0. Weaving works for art Artist Gabriela Diaconu's tapestries are on display in the Amelia Douglas Gallery until December 16. She recently demonstrated her weaving techniques in the gallery for students, College employees and members of the community.
