Carols and comedy for the holidays This year, the holiday performance calendar includes the sound of young voices singing traditional carols, Rossini’s last word, and love - Point Grey style. The Douglas College Choral Society begins the season with Rossini’s La petite messe solen- nelle on December 5 and 6. The mass was the final work by the composer known for his rousing overtures. Even though it is called the ‘Solemn Mass’, “it’s really not that solemn at all,” says Choral Society Director Tatsuo Hoshina. Instead, the work blends traditional choral music with flashy operatic solos. “I didn’t spare the dissonances,” observed Rossini, “but I put some sugar in it too.” Performances begin at 8 pm in the Performing Arts Theatre. The Douglas College Theatre Department presents Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii from Decem- ber 4 to 12. The romantic comedy by Canadian Allan Stratton uses mistaken identity to examine “novelists, advice columnists and ceramic artists” in Point Grey. Performances run December 4-6 and 8-12 at 8 pm, with a two-for-one matinee on December 6 at 2pm, at the Studio Theatre (Room 4140). Tickets to the choir and studio play are available by calling 527-5488. The season concludes with two shows in the Performing Arts Theatre. Stille Nacht the Fami- ly Christmas Concert runs December 18 at 8 pm featuring the Amabillis Singers, Douglas College Children’s Choir, and Surrey Children’s Choir. Tickets 939-6341. The Royal City Youth Ballet Company presents The Nutcracker, December 19, 7:30 pm, and December 20, 2:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Tickets 280-4444. «
