INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE / OCTOBER 2, 1990 Sports Action! Douglas golf team wins tournament The Douglas College Golf Team got off to a flying start in the 1990 B.C. College Athletics Association’s golf championships by winning the first tournament in Victoria on September 22 and 23. The tournament was hosted by Royal Roads Military College at the Broom Hill Golf Course. The severely sloped and contoured greens frazzled the nerves of most of the players as it took exception- al creativity and touch to get the ball close to the hole while chip- ping or putting. After Saturday’s round Douglas College, with a team total of 218, trailed Cariboo College by one stroke. Scores for Douglas were: Todd Hart 71 Bunki Yano 72 Neil Dodson 75 Sam Van Ieperen 83 Ray Porcellato 85 Douglas College beat Cariboo College by 15 strokes on Sunday, to win the tournament by a whop- ping 14 strokes. Scores for the Douglas College players were: Bunki Yano 70 Neil Dodson 70 Sam Van Ieperen 70 Todd Hart 77 Ray Porcellato 85 In the individual category, Bunki Yano of Douglas College, with a 36 hole total of 142, was three strokes behind Steve Owen of Malaspina College. The final team standings were: Douglas 428 Cariboo 442 Malaspina 443 Capilano 445 Fraser Valley 488 CBC 513 Royal Roads 596 The next tournament will be held at Rivershore in Kamloops on September 28 and 29, followed by Fairwinds October 5 and 6, and Ledgeview on October 13 and 14. Women’s volleyball team wins third place victory The Douglas College Women’s Volleyball Team came home with a third place finish in the Highline Community College Annual Tour- nament in Seattle, Washington recently. After a late Friday night ar- rival due to circumstances beyond their control, the team hopped right on the court with only a 10 minute warm-up (o play Skagit Valley Community College. Douglas played a very spirited match coming up on the short end of the score 15-11, 14-16, and 15-12, with the third game under rally point format. The team went on to win their final match of the night by scores of 15-7 and 15-10 over Blue Mountain College. Saturday saw the team up against host Highline College. Douglas fell in two straight games 15-9, 15-11, and followed witha three game loss to a very spirited Grays Harbour College team. Scores were 15-5, 4-15, and 15-13. Douglas then moved into the playoff round by defeating Blue Mountain again by 15-5, 15-10 scores. The team followed that up with a loss to Highline Com- munity College 15-7 and 15-12, placing third overall. The team’s next game is Oc- tober 20 when they open the B.C.College Athletic Association league at Trinity Western Univer- sity in Langley. _7— Badminton athlete returns from Cyprus Chantel Jobin, a member of the Douglas College Badminton team, has just returned from the World University Games in Cyprus. Seeded #1 in the doubles event and #2 in the singles and mixed events, Chantel found the heat and the food debilitating and could not play up to her potential. Eliminated in the quarter finals in all events, Chantel says “not only was I ill but I faced the Russians for the first time in the quarter finals and although none of them were seeded, they managed to win the tournament.” Chantel’s theory is that be- cause badminton will be part of the “92 Olympics, the Russians are now training their badminton ath- letes with the same intensity as their other programs and the rest of the world had better be prepared. A 26-year-old P.E. student Chantel has represented Canada many times. Last year she repre- sented Quebec and Canada at the Pan Am Games. We are extremely pleased to have her at Douglas College this year.
