The World Of Sports Darren Paterson, Sports Editor Section Editors Note: Welcome back, faithful viewers. Here is the column normally titled “From Deadline to Deadline.” I have, in a fit of news-section-inspiration, decided to revamp and retitle the column to make it an easier and more entertaining read. I hope you enjoy the new format as you update yourself on the always-entertaining world of. sports. Extra Extra! Big news from the NHL. There’s no end to the lockout just yet but they’ve finally restarted the negotiations as Bob Goodenow and the NHLPA have what may be a kickass new proposal for Gary Bettman and the owners. So who knows, maybe by the time the OP is running again in January, there will be an NHL to report on. Also, a boatload of information is coming across regarding doping as the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO), along with their trusty steroids, are being linked to such athletes as Barry Bonds and Marion Jones. Bonds has admitted to using the BALCO substances, but pleads ignorance as most of the accu- sations are coming from BALCO employees. Heh, so Bonds_ did steroids...who woulda thunk it? By the Numbers Brett Favre made his 200th straight NFL start and threw for three touchdowns. The iron-man streak is an NFL record for quarterbacks but is well short of the over- all record of 282 held by Jim Marshall, whose streak lasted 19 years and two teams. Brittany Timko’s seven goals in four games in the world women’s under-19 soccer tournament has earned her top- scorer honours in that tournament. She has also been selected to the tournament all-star team. The Canadian Olympic Committee has set its goals for the next three Olympic games. The plan is to finish top three and win 25 medals in Turin 2006, en route to 35 medals and a number-one placement in Vancouver 2010. They also hope to have Canada in the top 16, with 18 medals in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing—an increase from the 12 medals won in Athens. Reigning ringette champions, Canada, lost their title by blowing the world ringette championship title match against Finland by a score of 9-3. Also, Wally Buono had one successful heart surgery. Its a Wacky World Darryl Strawberry is on this year’s MLB Hall of Fame inductee ballot. However, his chances of being voted in to the hall seem slim. This is likely because he argued with Mr. Burns when he was pulled in the ninth inning in his guest-starring spot on The Simpsons. Oh! And getting kicked out of the league due to a cocaine addiction probably won’t help either. Peter Forsberg, the 2003 NHL MVP, has decided to try his hand as a fashion model in his homeland Sweden. This is probably due to his need for attention after being dubbed by Vancouverites and Torontonians, “the second-best Swedish hockey player.” Who the best is, is yet to be determined. And finally, the Canadian Press, in a desperate attempt to fill the void left by the NHL, has begun an NHL fantasy sea- son with EA sports’ NHL 2005. Sadly, the Canucks have had a slow start and have only recently pulled themselves to a 10—9-5 record with a four-game unbeaten streak.
