MAD aa Es the authors say, Vancouver scores high. For example, on a Canada- wide air quality index, the air in Greater Vancouver in 1986 generally measured in the ‘good’ range (the best of four possible categories of air quality). But, they point out, even when there is no overall danger of pollution, problems with specific pollutants can still occur. NEW FACULTY APPOINTMENT GILLIAN CROWLEY Eo fall Gillian joined the English and Communications Department following four years of teaching people in business, in- dustry and government how to improve their writing and read- ing skills. Aside from teaching business writing, her own business ex- perience includes managing a small consulting firm, administer- ing non-credit college courses, and working as a writer and editor for a federal ministry. Gillian says all her work ex- periences have confirmed the adage that "Writing is Power". "Although in one organization I was informed (not entirely tongue in cheek) that the purpose there was to obfuscate, not to clarify..." In addition to teaching business people, she has also spent five years teaching freshman composi- tion at Mount Royal College in Calgary, and a year teaching at the Alberta Vocational Institute (Calgary). ali e caitel One of her current projects is to complete an article on the role of revision within the composing, process which will be published in a book tentatively titled “Teachers as Researchers" (spon- sored by the University of Calgary). Since returning, to B.C. in 1986 after 16 chilly years in Calgary (al- though the people were warm), she says it’s wonderful to be back close to the mountains and sea again. She is hoping to take up sailing again and will continue hiking and cross-country skiing. Gillian had great plans for gar- dening too, but has since regressed to machete attacks on her backyard forest. oO FOR SALE 4 bedroom south Surrey / White Rock home.
