Back in 1973 the College initiated the program originally calluod the Social Animator Program to answer a local social service need. It was based on a Model of training first developed in Quebec. Subsequently, the program became known as the Community Social Service Worker program to express more clearly the program Career training goals. The program primarily serves the Douglas College region of New Westminster, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. It also serves the Kwantlen College area. Attracting mature adults who have already volunteered or have been employed in the social service field, this applied training program provides graduates with knowledge, skills, attitudes and ability to make appropriate judgments required in social service work. Program enrolment is open to full time and part time students. The program enjoys high regard in the marketplace as an excellent source of well trained, direct service staff for both government and private social service agencies. The Ministry of Human Resources has employed many of the program graduates as Financial Assistance Workers. Private agencies hire graduates to do a variety of jobs - coordinators, transition house workers, activity coordinators with older persons, information and referral centre workers, community organizers in neighbourhood and housing projects, family centre workers, medical social service workers, Native Indian Band social service workers, summer research workers and others.
