President’s Report Highlights - January These highlights are a summary of the report I present to the College’s Board of Directors each month. Some of the highlights are directly related to College developments, while others are more personal in nature. In each report, I want to give the College community an overview of as many of the major initiatives happening here as possible - and to recognize achievements of College faculty, staff, and administrators. It is only a summary; if you would like to read the full report, contact Ginny Batke at 527-5439. Susan Hunter-Harvey, President I have now been officially at the College for four months. Initiatives continue in several key directions. As you are aware, I am interested in fostering linkages with the community that are sustainable, not ‘hit and run’. Therefore, I have been focusing my attention on those partnerships that go beyond particular programs or projects that are short-lived MNsne_orvrion INside Douglas College is published the first Tuesday of every month by the Communications & Marketing Office and the College Duplicating Centre. V3L 5B2 and have devoted considerable time to ensuring that structural transformations accompany new initiatives. Two examples follow. 1. The British Columbia Open University. A working group and the CEOs of the four committed institutions (OLA, Capilano, Langara, Douglas) continue to meet to forge an operational and strategic plan for the BCOU. We met as a group in mid-January and it is hoped that a draft document will be available to the respective institutions by the end of February. Issues under consideration relate to a faculty pool, governance, programs, and administration. This is a wonderful opportunity to share resources and enhance access for learners. John McKendry and Terry Farrell represent Douglas College on the working group. 2. I continue to meet on a regular basis with the Coquitlam community. The Superintendent of the Coquitlam School District, Tom Harris, has demonstrated his commitment to working closely with Douglas College on numerous occasions. On December 22 we submitted a joint proposal to our respective ministries (Education and Skills, Training and Labour) for funding assistance to develop a Centre of Excellence in International Business Education. The Centre would offer courses, expertise, language training and cultural understanding to learners at the College through a unique partnership with the school district. It would also 9 address small business needs in the region. I had the pleasure of attending my first convocation at Douglas College. It was a beautiful event with a timely and thought- provoking message from Her Honour, Judge Marian Buller. Judge Buller and I have agreed to continue our professional relationship and will be meeting in the near future to discuss issues of concern for the aboriginal community. Judge Buller is a member of the Cree Nation. The organizers of the morning and afternoon commencement are to be congratulated for arranging such a professional and splendid experience for students and their families. It is my hope that more faculty and staff will attend future convocations in full regalia. The day is a significant one for graduates and the colour and ceremony add to their memories. Efforts continue to forge a game plan for learning technologies for the College, in particular for the new facility in Coquitlam. Under the guidance of Dr. Bill Bergquist and Mr. Don Jokins, a Social- Technical-Systems group has been formed with cross college representation to plan for the technology needs in Coquitlam. This STS team will be working with a group of faculty, professional staff and administrators to make decisions regarding technology needs at the new site. I Notes from the Thomas Haney Centre Director Marian Rossel! met recently with the five local secondary school principals to present new developments in Douglas College’s programs and courses. She also met with regional secondary school counsellors to inform them about the Concurrent Studies program so that they can share information with students. Marian Rossell and Physical Education Instructor Gert van Niekerk will make a presentation on the Centre’s articulation agreements in Business and Physcial Education this month to the League for Innovation in Orlando, Florida L.
