SPORTS Just a “OEM Bit More Time Royals end strong to finish tournament Brian McLennon, Sports Editor The Douglas College Royals men’s basketball team ended the weekend strong with a close loss to cross town rivals Langara. In a game that many expected to be lopsided, the Royals actual- ly showed a lot of toughness and resiliency after losing their first two games. Against Langara, they jumped out to a 13-5 lead early in the game and it was visible that the Royals may have clipped a wing on the Falcons’ projected take off. Led by UPEI transfer Andrew Rogers, who went 7 of 8 from the stripe and finished the game with 18 points, the Royals looked poised and determined as they headed into half only down by six points. In the second half, it was the battle of the big men as Berg and Thomson erupted for 24 of the 35 second-half points for the Royals. Cody Berg has returned this year in best shape of his career and his play this weekend showed fans how much damage he can inflict on opposing teams...if he is able to stay out of foul trouble. Berg dominated Sponuski [Patrick] as he by finished with a game high 20 points. Meanwhile, Jon Thomson and Langara’s Vlad Ruzic were head-to-head as they finished the game with 15 and 14 respectively. However, the big picture in this story, is not the wins and losses of this weekend, but it the process and growth of the program. Anyone who is anyone in basketball knows Jamie Oei can coach. The former CCAA coach of the year was the youngest head coach to win the prestigious national award. After a short hiatus from coaching, he has returned to lead a return to national prominence that once was representative of the Douglas basketball. Ask any coach around the league and they will tell you, he knows how to get the most out of his play- ers...every time they step on to the court. With the start of the season just around the corner, fans and coaches know, just a “Oei” more time and Douglas could be headed in the right direction to having a few more banners hanging from the rafters. out scored his counterpart 13 to 5 in second-half points and Womans Rugby All Tied Up Woman's Rugby knotted up in two of three games Dave Pearcey, OP Contributor Premier Women: Douglas 5—SFU 0 (default) It was disappointing that the premier team went without a game for the 3rd week ina row as SFU apparently had too many of their top players “unavailable.” 1st Division Women: Douglas 10—Kamloops 10 It’s always tough to travel to Kamloops, especially when the refereeing always seems to favour the home side. A try by Alicia Noger and a convert and penalty kick from Candace Barry accounted for the visitors’ scoring. 2nd Division Women: Douglas 5—Ridge Meadows 5 Played in a constant down- pour, the bigger and more experienced Douglas team had their hands full with a younger but well—organized first-year senior squad from the Meadows. Hailey Archer gave Douglas a 5—0 lead at the half, but Ridge Meadows capitalized on their only good opportunity of the game five minutes into the second half to escape with a tie. Next week the Premier and 1st Division teams take on Capilanos back-to-back at Klahanie Park on Saturday at 11:30am and 1:00pm. The 2nds tackle SFU. In men’s play, the 1st Division beat SFU 29—5, while 2nd Division clobbered the Clan 44—5.
