Why go to a D.C. social? Those of us craving excitement, adventure and alcohol induced fugue states, know the answer to that question. It’s for reasons of status. People from all avenues of social behavior can honorably compete to see who can withhold, without expelling vast gob- bets of semi-absorbed beverages in a manner displeasing to the eye. Belief has it that it may even be the tromping ground for deranged C.1.A. experiments; however, it is probably just a by-product of social stress or campus sociological indoctrination. Horse stuffers. A social is a chance to out-drink likely opponents in the procurement of affections or loss of lunch, in the firm belief that throwing- up shows that you really can gain status by being a brick. Neat shit, huh? In a phrase, the idea in mind behind the ‘social’ is to be social and how can one do it without conforming, relating, -or drinking. It is in itself an .act of social distinction, as well as gaining popularity by indulging in strains of social acceptability. Various people were enjoying them- selves, but did they really enjoy the process of enjoying themselves? The O.P. asked one student. Q. ‘‘Did you attend the first social of the year?’’ A. ‘‘Yes.”’ Q.‘‘What did you think of it?’’ A.“‘It was alright.’’ Q.‘‘What did you enjoy the most?’’ A.‘‘Uh...It was a good time.’’ Q.‘Did you enjoy the nude break dancers?’’ A.’’Yeah.
