Cai Hao (left) is Assistant Dean of the Physical Education & Hygiene Department at Shanghai Teachers University (STU) in Shanghai, while Lu Changya is an instructor in the same department. The guests, here from October 18 to early December, are being hosted by the Sport Science & Coaching Faculty and the Therapeutic Recreation Faculty. During their visit they will engage in professional development with students, faculty and practicum site supervisors in TR and Coaching. Douglas College and STU faculty have been jointly offering a Coaching and TR diploma program in Shanghai since 1998. Briefly Kudos Congratulations to Peter Taylor of Student Development on the birth of his son, Jakob David Taylor. Jakob was born at 10:27 am October 9, Thanksgiving Day, and weighed in at 8 pounds, 14 ounces. Proud parents Peter and Paula are ecstatic, and are all doing fine. Congratulations to History instructor Jacqueline Gresko, who was invited to contribute an entry for the new Encyclopedia of B.C. The 803-page glossy book with CD-ROM includes Gresko's submission about the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Oblates were Roman Catholic priests who came to Canada in 1858 and ran mission boarding schools in places like Kamloops, Cranbrook and Williams Lake. Congratulations to Health Information Services Program instructor Joy Fletcher, who has written a disease-classification textbook. Published in September, the /CD-10- CA/CCI Classification Primer is becoming a standard textbook for Canadian HIS programs. Douglas College’s HISP has been using the textbook since its release. October's 60/40 Employee Lottery winner is Gert Van Niekerk. Gert takes home $808.80, and student aid increases by $539.20. Theatre instructor Allan Lysell was recently reported to be shooting a role ina film called Rat Race with Whoopi Goldberg, John Cleese and Cuba Gooding Jr. Lysell is a regular on Cold Squad and had principal roles on The X-Files, Dead Man’ Gun and Poltergeist. Raakhee Nathoo, a Burnaby South secondary school student was the winner of a jacket as part of Employees’ service recognized Douglas College honoured 80 employees Oct. 27 at the third annual Recognition Reception and Retirement Dinner. The Recognition Reception is held to express appreciation to all employees with 15 or more years of service, while the Retirement Dinner is held in honour of current retirees and to welcome back past retirees. November 7 may have been a very bad day for the U.S. presidential candidates, but History 240 (USA to 1877) students had a great class, instructor Jacqueline Gresko reports. The class met in the teleconferencing room to view results of the election on TV. The students’ project was (1) to compare this election and three historic contests, and (2) to estimate the electoral college results. Sharn Tyakoff, a Political Science instructor, gave the class advice on the current electoral process. The way it looked in late-November, the class may have to invite Sharn back next semester in History 241 for another Romano (missed last year). class on the history of the American presidency. Entrepreneur awards night a big success Nine small business owners emerged as winners at the fourth annual Entrepreneur of the Year awards evening October 24. All were graduates of Douglas College's Self Employment (SE) Program. More than 450 entrepreneurs, dignitaries, staff and guests gathered at the Executive Inn in Burnaby to recognize the inspiring business achievements. The SE Program, funded by Human Resources Development Canada, has helped almost 1,000 people create their own employment through training, income support, counselling and networking. Many thanks go to the major sponsor (VanCity) and the award sponsors. Employees on the Move Terri Jones, a newcomer to Douglas College, joins Finance in the new position of Payroll Officer. She will be looking after the full- and part-time BCGEU employees. In Sciences & Technology, Colleen Murison moves from auxiliary to regular as Biology Lab Tech II, replacing Helen Palmer who retires December 31.
