INside The Douglas College Newsletter @ New Westminster Campus, David Lam Campus & Thomas Haney Campus July and August 1999 IN Douglas College Shanghai students to receive College diploma Students in Shanghai, China can now receive a diploma in Financial Markets and Investment Management from Douglas College, all without leaving home. In partnership with the Shanghai Institute for Foreign Trade (SIFT), the College will offer a diploma program as part of a degree in Shanghai, leading to graduate level studies in finance or business administration. “The diploma we contribute is the specialized finance component of the degree,” says Commerce and Business Dean Jim Sator. “All of the students are Chinese, and we expect that they will be employed in China upon graduation.” College instructors will teach the first two intakes while SIFT faculty, after undergoing professional development at the College, will take over thereafter. The program design and structure also allows for visiting professors, ensuring that students get a broad range of experiences during their course of studies. “Our partners in China have assured us that the demand for the program and its graduates is a very high priority,” says Vice-President of Instruction John McKendry. Preliminary discussions with Canadian business executives in Shanghai have been favourable. “Shanghai is rapidly becoming one of the key business centres in the world,” he continues. “Major financial institutions from around the world have established a presence there, and all indications are that China is committed to establishing Shanghai as a major force in its economic affairs and in international business.” This diploma program is Douglas College’s first joint venture with SIFT. Similar partnerships also exist between the College and Shanghai Teacher’s University and the Shanghai Administration College. Frick has led his team to several prestigious titles. It won the Gold Cup world championships in 1998 and 1994, and Paralympics titles in 1996 and 1992. Frick is also the only coach in Canada to win a gold medal at a world championship or Olympic games in basketball — able-bodied or wheelchair. Congratulations Tim! The federally sponsored five-week intensive immersion program consists mainly of full-time university/CEGEP students from Quebec as well as some international students. Students in the program participate in a variety of activities from classroom assignments to field trips, workshops, cultural presentations at local elementary schools, socio-cultural events and theatrical productions. And they take away more than just fluency in another language — they develop an appreciation for the culture of another part of Canada. For more information, contact Lani Hyde at local 5412.
