INSIDE DOUGLAS COLLEGE/NOVEMBER 15, 1988 User Accounts on the Data General So, you are sold on the wonders of computer technol- ogy and want to get in on the excitement! Or you are being dragged "kicking and scream- ing" into it. Either way, if you need/want to use the College’s Minicomputer facilities for word processing or statistics or what- have-you, you will need a Douglas College User Account. There is nothing tricky about getting one. If you are faculty, staff mem- ber, or administration, all you have to do is fill out a simple form called a "Request for DG MV/15000 User Account”. Just drop in to the Systems and Com- puting Department (Room 4720) and ask one of the staff to help you. Students, at the present time cannot obtain a User Account on the College’s minicomputer unless they are in a course re- quiring the use of the facility. Such students will be notified by their instructor. It is hoped that facilities will be available in 10 the future to open up access more fully to students. Where is there a computer I can use? The College utilizes IBM-PC compatible micro computers for the bulk of the computer train- ing/instruction. There are currently three micro labs which are used as teaching classrooms; two at New Westminster cam- pus and one at Maple Ridge Campus. A significant amount of instruction and most of the ad- ministrative word processing and electronic mail is done on a Data General MV/15000 com- puter. There are two locations where students can access these resour- ces outside of a classroom setting; bookable time through the library Information Desk, and an "open" lab in room 4363 which is open for use from 7:00 am through 11:00 pm each weekday with reduced hours on the weekends. Faculty may use the above resources or use the "faculty workrooms” 4703 and 4321/23. Room 4703 also has an optical mark reader (OMR) for marking tests and an Optical Character Reader (OCR) for capturing cer- tain printed documents onto magnetic media (eg. onto IBM PC compatible diskettes in WordPerfect format.) For your quick reference: @ Classrooms/labs - 4333,4335 & 3910 - booked for classes, occasional open times # Open labs - 4363, and the Library (book times at the Information Desk) @ Faculty workrooms - 4321, 4703 and the Library Documentation Available We are preparing a number of handouts which will become available on such topics as How to get started on the Data General, How to Get a User Id, User Instructions for P-EDIT, SPSSx User’s Handbook, etc. Your suggestions for other topics are invited.
