% TO: DOUGLAS COLLEGE BOARD April 17, 1986 Internal Matters - Education On March 24th, the Minister of Post Secondary Education, the Honourable Russell Fraser, together with the Deputy Minister and Assistant Deputy Minister and staff visited Douglas College - the first of a formal series of visits to other tertiary institutions under the Minister's jurisdiction. On March 24th and April 9th, the Education Policy and Planning Committee met with the Management Committee of Douglas College, to carry out an intensive review of the proposed changes to Ministry Goals and Objectives for the colleges and institutes system. The results of these two very productive meetings are to be dealt with by the Board tonight. During the month, the Douglas College Foundation Board met, and has recommended a policy statement regarding the role and relationship of the Foundation to the College, which the Board will be reviewing later this evening. On April Ist, Mr. Austin Pelton, Minister of the Environment, and MLA for Dewdney, visited the College and met Mr. Gerry Trerise, the Chairman of the Maple Ridge School Board, Betty Levens, Mr. Ed Swaren, Acting Superintendent of Schools for Maple Ridge, Mr. Jim Doerr, Dr. Val Schaefer, and Dr. Adrianne Peacock. Mr. Pelton is supportive of the efforts at Douglas College to maintain adequate levels of service in Maple Ridge, and expressed considerable interest in the environmental studies activities in which the College has been engaged, due to the initiative of our Biology faculty. Much activity during the month has involved dealing with the implications of the budgetry allocations provided to Douglas College from the Provincial Government, and in communications with Government - as an institution, and via the B.C. Council of College and Institutes Principals. On April llth, there was a meeting of the Chief Executive Officers and Board Chairmen of Colleges and Institutes with the Minister of Education in this connection. Today, I met with Dr. Fisher of the Ministry, together with his staff, in association with executive members of the BCAC, in order to pursue budgetary concerns. Internal Matters - Personnel The primary focus of concern over the past month has been continued discussion with the DKFA regarding contract faculty.
