The women's tournament features eight teams from across North America including Central Wyoming College; Edmonds Community College (Washington); the College of San Mateo (California), which has an enrolment of 20,500; Lamar Community College of Colorado; Inver Hills Community Col lege, Minnesota; Northeast Tech. Community College (Nebraska) and Hickam AFB (Hawaii), These teams will round out the draw for the women. The Douglas College Women's team is favoured to win the Conference Championship this year; and often have a difficult time finding competition mature enough for them. (continued) This tournament should provide several good opportunities for competition, as well as a much needed break from cold and snow. The men's draw has six teams including Prairie State (l|linois); Edmonds (Wash.); Centralia (Wash.), Waukesh Tech, and the Marines from Hawaii. The Douglas College Men's team is an excellent team this year. They recently redeemed themselves by defeating the Royal Classic Tournament winners, the Vancouver City Police. As you may remember, the Police narrowly defeated Douglas to win the Royal Classic last month The Police are a tough, physical team and do not take lightly to being defeated by a group of college "jocks". The game was extremely rough and Coach Steve Beauchamp described the win as "most satisfying". The fund raising for this trip has not been easy as both teams only started to raise money in September. For a while it was a touch and go as to whether they went to Hawaii or to Edmonton at Christmas. Fortunately thanks to aloan from the Student Society, the teams are looking forward to an almost international tournament. The Best of Luck to both Douglas College Men's and Women's Basketball teams! Volleyball Watch this year's Men's Volleyball team wreak a merciless path to first place in the league. Malaspina Athletic Director Les Malbon describes them as a "Class. Act" both on the floor and off. You don't know how gratifying it is for me to hear that kind of compliment. The Women's Volleyball team is hanging in there but Coach Loretta Zavarise in only discovering now what Richard Norman went through three years ago. The first year of a new coach is a building year, and only the second and third years are really competitive. My compliments to the women's team for showing grace under pressure.
