Sports the other press Flash Gordon e dcsportseditor@yahoo.ca December 10, 2003 Pa Flash Gordon Sports Editor It's exam period already? Where has the time gone? While I reflect on this semester gone-by, there is a mildly chilly December evening developing outside. The end to summer was graced by a fair bit of hype about a new basket- ball coach and signing some of BC’s top talent to become Royals. The coach was Steve McGilligan. I never heard of the guy until Lou Rene Legge insisted he was “big news” for Douglas. So I tracked him down to his office. I thought “man is this guy short” but he brought Donald Burton and Cody Berg here and his coaching seems to have an affect on these guys: In September, those two were also names I had never heard. That was months ago. Now I’m used to seeing these guys around and I’m well aware of what they can do on a basketball court. Let’s hope the evil “ineligibility” doesn’t claim our ballers over the break. Matt Ormerod this. Matt Ormerod that. “Don't bring up that he is the coach’s son,” they told me. If Mattie sucked at soccer, I'd have no choice but to open a can of proverbial-sports- journalistic-whoop-ass. The young Mr. Ormerod has done this college proud for a few years with his athletic ability and skill on the field. From day one of the semester, I heard so much noise about soccer that it could have made me ill. “Douglas College is hosting the nationals,” was beaten into my brain over and over. “Our soccer team is going to win it all,” was promised. The jinx worked and the Royals didn’t win but finished a respectable third-place in the nation. Hosting the National College Soccer Championships turned out to be a tremendous success for the Centre for Sport and Douglas College. The praise was still being heard months after the fact. To date, I haven't heard a negative detail about the tournament as yet. Maybe I will make one up to even things out— maybe not. At the beginning of the volleyball season in October, I didn’t know much about the sport and I still don’t. But those girls in tight shorts sure are fun to watch. The team has a whole ton of rookies listed on the roster but it doesn’t seem to have affected their place in the stand- ings. They will have a hold on third place in the league until the season starts up again in the New Year. Most notable performances came from Jodie Blasco and Erica Jones, who are both new to the team. Women’s soccer was far from a show of all- stars since they were mostly a bunch of rookies unprepared for the physical college level of sports. Injuries plagued the roster for two months—three goalies came and went from the disabled list. I’ve said it before but on any given weekend they played some gutsy soccer that delivered some well-earned wins. Head Coach John Judd discovered some strengths and elim- inated some weaknesses as the team developed. There is a fair bit of potential for a decent squad next year so let’s hope it all comes togeth- er. Ed Lunn, his brother Ed Jr., and their trusty sidekick Richard Norman gathered the first two wins for the women’s basketball team in a year. Aside from Stephanie Hibbert and Jessie Knight, there is a brand new team on the court. It looks like there is way more fight in these girls than on previous teams. By the looks of the standings, a couple more teams are in dan- ger of being beaten by the Lady Royals. I have the utmost faith that they can and will contin- ue to improve as the season moves forward. Men's volleyball has been ugly from the get- go. The Royals are currently bottom-feeders with one win under their belt going into the holidays. There's some guy with a shock of white hair walking around the school. It could be a rookie thing or a “look at me, I’m a weird volleyball player” thing. Clearly, Coach Sapic has his work cut out of him this season. All hope isn’t lost unless Jeff Payne is captured by aliens over the Christmas Break. Then all hope is lost. ae.
