Worksite Wellness by Lou Rene Legge Director, Centre for Sport, Recreation and Wellness In the last issue of INside, I wrote about the concept that we could each take some responsibility to improve job satisfaction. I sent out a call for ideas that would contribute to practices encouraging this, and promised a free massage for the most inspired suggestion. That prize will go to Donna Dykeman of the CMO (this was not a fixed contest! Honest! ed.), for her suggestion to offer a fun component on effective workplace communication as part of our “Learn to” series. Thanks also to Chris Johnson for his offer of funding our next Wellness project, and to everyone else who called to offer encouragement and articles. Poor communication in the workplace is considered to be one of the three largest contibutors to stress, right up there with lack of control over deadlines and methods and conflict between work and personal roles. Poor communication results in many of the daily stressors that can cause bogdowns, burnouts and workplace illness. It makes sense to try different ways to improve an area that affects the whole workplace — watch for our next “Learn to” series. Contest MC Richard Williams popped the questions until two lucky couples linked up for a night on the town that featured dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory followed by a Classic Limousine ride to a Vancouver Grizzlies game. The same day, Renate Brown of Facilities came out smiling in the “Douglas Has A Heart” 50/50 draw. Economics Instructor Murray Leslie is still looking for additional donations to the Heart Fund, and would be delighted to give you a tax receipt for yours. Murray can be found in Room 4300 of the New Westminster Campus or at local 5173.
