Fork This Olympic pavilion wrap-up Jay Schreiber 4, arts editor ow that the Olympics have ended, with glowing hearts and gold medals around our necks, the saddest thing of all is the giant exodus of all the cool crap that was going on around our city. In the grand scheme of the Olympics, the Pavilions set up by each visiting nation were one of the major highlights of the ongoing craziness that happened last February. Here now are the gold, silver and bronze medal winners for the best place to hang out and drink beer. Gold medal — Canadian pavilions Duh, who else would know how to party best? Located in between BC Place and Science World, the Canadian pavilions were definitely the place to be. The Maison Du Quebec had decent food, ample sitting room, and an okay stage set up, which was sadly overshadowed by the fact that it cost $10 per Franco beer. Granted, the succulent and smooth taste made the French- Canadian experience that much better accompanied by the tasty poutine. Saskatchewan House gets an honourable mention for having the best set up stage and drinking area, but loses points for serving Molson products exclusively. Onterrible House had a good atmosphere and the best drinkables at only $6 per pint of Steam Whistle. Not a bad place to hang out for a brew, but you had to get there early; the maximum capacity of 350 people made fighting over the 20 chairs that much more difficult. Silver medal — Deutsches Pavilion The German House is a close second for a few well-engineered reasons. The location was perfect, seated right next to Waterfront SkyTrain Station and only a few short blocks from everything else by the water. Lineups were usually not a problem and the bratwurst was to die for when covered in sauerkraut. Beer was around $9 but well worth the expense once your taste buds found out about it. Seating was ample with long tables stretched throughout the structure and they had the biggest screen to watch the games on of all the pavilions. The stage had some good performers, and the Quebec and Saskatchewan Pavilions Bronze medal — Scandinavian House Coming in third is the quiet and easy-to-get-along-with Scandinavian watering hole. No points for location, the Scandinavian centre was located in Burnaby, close to 8 Rinks, away from the hoopla of downtown. fill your belly. Finns, Swedes, Danes and Norwegians were all present and made a good-natured effort to support their respective countries.
