Ts tetas Hea LAG 2 ——— - | ~ ARCHIVES On November 4, a number of provincial meetings occurred that dealt broadly with the profile of the colleges and institutes in the current political environment. I am acting for the Council of Principals on a joint Council of Principals and BCAC Committee dealing with public information on the colleges and institutes. That committee has devised a proposed program of activities dealing with the public information regarding colleges and institutes during this year. The program will be presented to the Board of Directors of the BCAC and to the Council] of Principals in the near future. Should these pro- posals be accepted, members of the College Board will be invited to participate in a major program later this winter, dealing with the topic. Following that meeting, as Vice-Chairman of the Council of Principals, I met with other table officers, in order to refine a presentation that was made later that afternoon to Mr. Jim Carter, Deputy Minister of Education, at an informal meeting of repre- sentatives of the C-IEA, the BCAC, and the Council of Principals. That evening, and the following day, Mr. Jim Doerr and Ms. Virginia Chisholm represented the College at a workshop on Distance Education, sponsored by the BCAC. Reports on that workshop will be forthcoming to the Board in due course. Since the last Regular Meeting of the Board, discussions have con- tinued with BCIT and the Ministry of Education regarding the mooted move of Psychiatric Nursing to Douglas College. It is clear that there were far too many outstanding issues to enable @ move of that program to Douglas College by the January intake. Dr, Fisher has therefore put off the target date for the move to September, 1984. Discussions continue within BCIT. It is my under- standing that by the end of the month, BCIT internal consultation will have been completed, and we will be in a position to meet with Dr. Fisher to discuss those issues that were reviewed with the Board at their closed meeting October 20. The Board will be informed as soon as any Ssiqnificant new developments occur. Internal Matters ~ Education Dr. John Dennison, of the Faculty of Education at UBC, made a presen- tation to the College on November 3. Dr. Dennison is one of the few researchers in Canada, systematically analyzing data on community colleges and institutes. The substance of his lecture was a comparison of the legal environment within which comunity colleges operate across Canada. His presentation graphically described the different origins of colleges and institutes across the country, the different directions in which they have evolved within the provinces, and the quite different political environments within which these institutions find themselves at this time.
