$B The Mad Hatter | A Douglas College Newslette I July 14, 1987 STAGECRAFT ARRIVES Stagecraft, an innovative new program teaching the production technology of the entertainment in- dustry, begins at Douglas College this fall. Stagecraft trains students for entry-level positions in the technical production of stage, film and televi- sion. The opportunities for employment in entertainment, especially in film, have increased dramatically in the last several years. Numerous films, Canadian and American, are now @': made in the Lower Mainland. n fact, this area is becoming known as the “Hollywood of the North.” Film-makers and others in the en- tertainment industry need _ well- trained and skilled technicians. The Stagecraft program will train students to fulfill that need. Drew Young, a Theatre Instructor at Douglas College since 1983, is the Convenor of the Stagecraft program. “There is nothing like this program anywhere in B.C.,” he says. “With its intense concentration on the practical aspects of entertain- ment, Stagecraft will provide the motivated and talented individual with the skills to begin a satisfying career in the industry,” says Young. He was the Technical Supervisor for Street Entertainment at Expo last year and also works every year at the Children’s Festival. “It's a wide-open field,” Young adds. “As well as working in film, theatre and television, graduates will A stagecraft technician at Danger Bay productions. also be able to work on such diverse events as sales promotions, fashion shows and trade and _ industrial shows. They may also get jobs work- ing as technical personnel for compa- nies which rent out production equip-ment to visiting film crews.
