A time to remember

hroughout the year, it’s pretty

safe to say that Canadians

are swamped with holidays.
Every month seems to bring it’s
own special day to commemorate
or recognize, and after a while, it
can be a bit wearing for the average
person. Over time, this can cause
certain days to lose a bit of their
meaning.

However, there is one day
that, even in the midst of all the
other holidays sprinkled across
the calendar that we should,
fittingly, never forget. I’m speaking
of course, about November 11,
Remembrance Day.

Every November we hear about
the ultimate sacrifices that so many
Canadians have given our country
over the years to help secure and
protect so many of the freedoms
we take for granted today. The
reason we are reminded of that
time and time again comes back
to one simple thing: It’s the truth.
It’s mind-boggling really, when
you think about it. For the most
part, we live in one of the best
countries in the world with so many
opportunities and at our fingertips,
sometimes we really should take
a few moments to look back and
reflect on how many times and

 

how close we’ve come in the past
to losing what we have today. It’s
a simple gesture, but one that if
performed with conviction can be
full of meaning. It’s up to you to
make it so.

Remembrance Day however,
isn’t just about the veterans of the
first two world wars. Take the time
to remember the fallen in Canada’s
current efforts in the Middle East,
and their efforts to bring peace
and the type of society so many
of us take for granted today to the
poor and war-ravaged people over
there. Keep those that are still half a
world away, fighting in foreign and
dangerous lands to make the world
a better place, in your thoughts and
hearts.

In a perfect world, we would
take the time to remember those that
have died for us every single day,
but in reality, with so many things
occupying so much of our time,
that isn’t always possible. However,
when November 11 comes around
in a few days, don’t view it as just
another day. When you’re asked
to bow your head in a moment of
silence, don’t do it merely out of
habit and as a formality; really
take the time to truly appreciate the
freedoms we are blessed with today
and remember exactly how and why
we have them, and what it has cost
us over the decades.
