UBC played hard and aggressive rugby from the opening whistle to record their first win over Douglas in six years. The game started on a positive note for the New West ladies, as they drove down to within inch- es of the UBC try-line. An attempt to send a long pass out to the open winger went awry however, and UBC kicked the ball 30 metres back upfield. The Point Grey team loose opened the scoring when a lucky bounce landed into the hands of centre Rosie Cobbett; she didn’t break stride as she ran 40 metres for the try. The conversion made it 0-7, Douglas made another costly error when a kick for touch by UBC curved back into play and into the Douglas in-goal area. A knock-on gave UBC a five metre scrum, and they drove the Douglas pack over the line to score again (0-12). Douglas narrowed the gap after a long run down the side- line by Vickie Dhillon set up an easy score for Laura Harmse. The Blues’ backs executed sever- al good plays and on more than one occasion found themselves with only the UBC fullback to beat. Unfortunately, the support was not there, and these oppor- tunities were lost. The second half was a grind- ing battle and neither team was able to add to the tryline. Douglas travels to Victoria for their last league game against James Bay. They need a win to get the team on the right track for the playofts. Second Division: Douglas 7 SFU 3 This win sets up a battle for first place against Kamloops next Sunday. After a scoreless first half, SFU counted first with a penalty kick. Douglas came back with a try by centre Anita Dhillon. Megan Griffiths added the convert to round out the scoring.
