March 5, 1990 Other Press 24-7 Spyz Are Harder Than You 24-7 Spyz Harder Than You Relativity/WEA Rising to the fore in the wake of Living Colour’s smashing suc- cess on the airwaves are a number of black bands who actually play something else besides soul. In reality, they have always been around; but, slapped in the face with Vivid’s popularity (and mas- sive sales), record company pin- heads have been forced to drop their racist stereotypes and let the good times roll. 24-7 Spyz, along with Bad Brains and the Red Hot Chili Pep- pers, are at the forefront of the bat- tle to reclaim rock’s heritage. And they can play. They don’t get trapped into the normal three- chords-then-solo-your-brains-out routine, either. In fact, 24-7 Spyz are bringing influences into metal that have been sorely needed to revamp that anemic medium: rap, hardcore, and even funk. The sound is vital, interesting and REALLY LOUD. Harder Than You contains that eclectic mix of influences, and they manage to actually say something while they’re at it as well. I know the "socially conscious musician" thing is wearing a little thin, but it is something sorely missed in metal, where 99% of the lyrical content is completely devoid of thought. Election violence is discussed in "Ballots Not Bullets" to a reggae beat, and a ripped off melody from Kool & the Gang mesh with P. Fluid’s thoughts on capitalist racist scum to make "Jungle Boogie" the most hip cut on a really good record. In some respects, 24-7 Spyz really have their shit together. However, for all the thought they have put into racism, Spyz have not thought about sexism at all. This band is almost (but not quite) as offensive as Guns ’N Roses in that respect. And it does really put me off. But maybe if you write them and explain it to them, they won’t do it anymore (24-7 Spyz, c/o In-Effect, 187-07 ‘Henderson Ave., Hollis, N.Y. 11423). Musically though, the Spyz and their cohorts are out to make the breakthrough they so desperate- ly deserve - and they are going to make it.
