The community-based Douglas College Choral Society invites you to a new season under conductor Patricia Rolston beginning on September 21. Auditions will be held early in the season, but Rolston urges both experienced and new singers interested in choral music to give the society a try. “T like to encourage new singers,” said Rolston, who is also Music Director of the Richmond Community Music School. “There are a lot of people out there with good voices who would like to be in a choir but who have never had the opportunity.” This season the society will perform Handel’s Messiah and Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. In addition to its rehearsals and concerts, the choir also holds social get-togethers. The society rehearses Wednesday evenings in the College’s Performing Arts Theatre. For more information call the College’s Community Music School at 527-5469; there is a fee for the season. ff Opticians continued from page 1 areas such as mathematics, English, the sciences, computers and business. With final Ministry funding approval expected shortly, the curriculum is currently being developed in cooperation with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, which offers a distance training program, and the Opticians’ Association of Canada. Blueprints for the new campus in Coquitlam include plans for a retail optical outlet staffed by students. “This could be available to the College and general community and would generate revenue to help offset program costs,” said Holmwood. The program will primarily train newcomers to the field, although advanced training will be available for those already working in the industry. There are currently about 2,000 people working in optical dispensing in B.C., and training standards for them will be regulated by a new College of Dispensing Opticianry. B.C. is the last province in Canada to require certified training in this field.
