The &* _A ECEMBER 8, 1987 Mad Hatter Douglas College Newsletter TRIO WILL BE COOKIN’ AT NOON azZ may conjure images of dark, smoky after-hours clubs, but it’s the musicians, not the at- mosphere, that make the music "cook". Hear some fine jazz im- provisation in an unusual setting when trombonist lan McDougall and his trio, Search, appear as part of the Noon at New West concert series at Douglas College. The trio also includes Ron Johnston on keyboards and Oliver Gannon on guitar. All three are familiar faces on the west coast jazz scene and alumni of the legendary big band, Pacific Salt. ; The December 10th concert will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Perform- ing Arts Theatre. There is no charge for admission, and the public is welcome to attend. The Noon at New West series is staged primarily so that Douglas College music students can ex- pericnce a wide range of different kinds of music. Faculty member Henry Waack, who arranges the series, says, "What I try to get every semester is a lot of variety. Everything from synthesizer music to baro- que. The students get a chance to listen to all kinds of music, not just the classical things that they’re used to. It runs the gamut right from jazz to oratorio." The Search performance is the last concert of this year’s series. For more information, please con- tact the music department. CHRISTMAS CAROL CONCERT Vou and old alike are sure to enjoy a concert of Christmas carols and festive music by the Douglas College Community Choir and Youth Choir, to be presented in New Westminster on Wednesday, December 16. Director Diane Loomer says the _ group plans an exciting program mixing old favourites with less familiar works. Along with tradi- tional carols, the choir will also perform the Gloria from the Heilig Mass (Holy Mass) of Josef Haydn, Sanctus by Gounod, Handel's Hallelujah Chorus, and the Wachet Auf (Sleepers, Awake) by Bach. They will also sing ar- rangements of Swedish, Italian and Spanish carols. “Throughout the program,” Loomer adds, "the audience will be invited to join in and sing some of the carols with us. It’s definitely designed as a family concert.” The singers will be accom- — panied by trumpet, flute, and organ. The concert will be held in Queen’s Avenue United Church, 529 QOucen’s Avenue, New Westminster where, as Loomer ex- plains, "they have a huge, wonderful, pipe organ."
