of Piece" he Week 3 By Stephanie Trembath, Fashion Editor Ove wearing men’s oversized T-shirts to bed? Fancy sporting boxers around the house rather than booty-shorts? Well, ladies, now you can leave the house in menswear and still look sexy and stylish. ~ Never having gone out of style with its simple and classic design, the boyfriend blazer is super comfy and may be dressed up or down to go with any outfit. Rolled cuffs and an appearance of being a touch too big signify the boyfriend blazer. To capture the “look” is to appear as if your high school crush has lent you his jacket while you’ re at the carnival; just picture Sandy and Danny from Grease and you'll get the idea. Buttoned up the front with a tumed down collar, this jacket is perfect to layer over a sweater if you’re trekking outside, or by itself with leggings or flirty dress. Because of the extended v-neck, a knotted scarf, The boyfriend blazer long chained necklace, or chunky pendant hanging just above the chest finish the outfit, and using accessories adds a feminine touch to the masculine apparel. The slouchy and nonchalant appearance of the blazer is contrasted when worn with a romantic top or sequined shirt. Paired with a mini skirt and high heels, the blazer is more playful and shows a bit of sex appeal. Even when worn with denim jeans and basic flats, the blazer still allows for any outfit to look polished and classy. Effortless and time savvy is the look of the boyfriend blazer; a piece that makes a statement all on its own and doesn’t require much fuss. The boyfriend blazer for 2010 is more military style with coloured buttons, shoulder pads, and heavy embellishments. Plain black pants and sunglasses compliment the military- esque blazers. But make sure to steer clear of wearing the military wear with a dress or skirt; a feminine touch to armed forces really doesn’t mix too nicely. Fashion moderna musef By Stephanie Trembath, Fashion Editor the stage in Vancouver last week sporting their usual casual chic clothing Tegan and Sara Top five worst trends of the 2000s By Stephanie Trembath, Fashion Editor — off on the runway; some of which will be kept and others which will hopefully be ith identical deep brown eyes and mischievous smiles, Tegan and Sara took I: celebrating the start of the New Year there are fresh fashion finds ready to take that gives them an indie rocker chick appearance. With brown wispy hair fashioned in a choppy sort of mullet, these twins have created a whole new sense of style with their carelessly crafted apparel. Donned in simple tanks and plain Converse sneakers, the twins’ fashion philosophy is pretty understated and simple. Their pixie haircuts and heart shaped faces contrast heavily with the tattoos decorating their bare arms and masculine haircuts. With smoky liner edging their large brown eyes the girls have a most haunting look when they take the stage, especially when the lights are dimmed and smoke machines working. The audience was filled with guys and girls alike wearing outfits typical of the hipster trend skirting through Vancouver right now; skinny jeans, collared shirts with pencil-thin ties, and granny glasses that I hoped didn’t have a prescription in them. Thanks to modern muses like Tegan and Sara, the simple look of indie rock is making a huge comeback and giving American Apparel a lot of business. Audrey Hepburn wore simple and classic clothing back in the 1950s; dark tones with minimal jewelry and accessories. Tegan and Sarah have adopted this effortless edge in their dress, but they’ve eliminated the elegance. Rather than settle for the superficial, and get all glammed up for a concert, the girls opt to be themselves and dress exactly how they want when they’re performing their music. worn only on the catwalk. Looking back at the last ten years there are many styles that should have been closeted and never worn in public; here’s a quick look at the five worst trends of the last decade. 1. Harem pants: Only Princess Jasmine can pull of the baggy pants that are cinched around the ankle and hang low at the crotch. We should have listened to MC Hammer when he said “Can’t touch this” instead of wearing these elastic pants in dressy colors and satin touches throughout 2008-2009. 2. Crocs: Who would want to wear a foam shoe in a clog design anywhere but the spa or pool deck? Apparently millions do, in neon bright colors that only add to the eyesore. The Croc is proof of why one should never sacrifice style for comfort. 3. Trucker hats: In bright colours with elaborate writing and decorations on the front, these hats made everyone look ridiculous; from Ashton Kutcher to the infamous Brittney Spears, trucker hats made their debut around Hollywood. Unless you’re still listening to “Hit Me Baby One More Time”, I think it’s time to shelf the trucker hat and move on to more inspiring celebrity icons. 4. Ed Hardy: Large, embellished tattoo prints that are showcased on T-shits, hats, and body parts. I can only think of one word to describe them: obscene. In glitter and gold the clothing is unattractively eye-catching, while decorative “tramp stamps” that utilizes Ed Hardy designs call for unnecessary attention. 5. The Swarovski cell: Known as the “fashion phone” and bejeweled in tiny encrusted crystals, these cell phones were sported by many celebs and became one of the most sought after fashion items. With designs from Ed Hardy, the sparkly cell face plates cost anywhere from $300—1000 and are a symbol of how North Americans continue to find new ways to waste copious amounts of money. 11
