Letters Dear editor, Contrary to media opinion, the students protesting against undesirable APEC leaders in November, 1997, did not have the right to trample the RCMP-installed fence, physical charge at the RCMP and attempt to make a “citizen's arrest” on Suharto and Jiang Zemin (‘Interfer- ence can be investigated, Jan.13 edition). Although I’m not one to defend real police brutality, I disagree with the seemingly- unconditional support Dear editor, Why doesn't society focus its attention on elimi- nating all violence, perpe- trated against men and women, rather than just “violence against women”? (‘Women’s Centre safety audit/ Jan.27 edition). What feminists and their strong ideological allies in the media seriously fail to—or choose not to— consider is this very real possibility: that by focusing only or mostly on female victims of violence, society and the media are only treating a symptom of the violence disease; hence, the elimination of “violence against women” may come Starving Student ISCOUNT NIGHT apparently given by the majority of the media to the out-of-control students who were pepper sprayed by RCMP during that protest; in fact, I feel that those student demonstrators basically got what they had coming, and those students should take their proverbial lumps with some dignity instead of with their current whining. Not to be mistaken, I do not in the least support the likes of the despicable above- mentioned leaders of Indone- sia and China; however, one about by combating all violence against males and females, including female- _against-male violence. Furthermore, the term “violence against women” in itself strongly implies that violence against men is not of any real significance and, to those on the extreme, may even be acceptable. Just watch all of the TV programs in which the audience gets a good laugh at a male charac- ter getting punched in the face or kneed in the groin by an angry woman, whose perceived justification for doing so was simply, for example, a cheating boy- friend. Also, although the ratio must realise that if the chaotic protest had instead involved anti-abortionist or anti-homosexuality demon- strators outside an abortion clinic or a Surrey school, they could have been beaten by police, and, I believe, none of the dominating left-wing elements in the established press would have given a damn. It should be realised that the fence-trampling students who got pepper sprayed would have deserved sympathy had they not been so physical and fanatical. Frank G. Sterle changes year to year, the last time I checked, for every female murdered, two males meet the same fate. Sure, male victims are often murdered by other males; however, this fact should not diminish the fact that a life has been violently stolen. Seriously, let’s condemn and combat all violence against both males and females. Frank G.
