INside .. The Douglas College Newsletter n New Westminster Campus, David Lam Campus & Thomas Haney Campus Joint effort reaps reward for nursing programs A collaboration between Douglas College’s General Nursing Program and nine other programs in BC earned them a national award in April. Selected by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) as the winner of its 2001 ACCC Program Excellence Award, the Collaborative Nursing Program was chosen from about 30 applications from 175 member institutions. The criteria for the award are innovation, portability, sustainability, effectiveness, participation and efficiency. “We're very pleased with this recognition,” says Health Sciences Dean Joy Holmwood. “A program of this magnitude is not known in North America. It’s a unique collaboration that serves as a model for other programs.” The Collaborative Nursing Program is a unique partnership between the 10 institutions to share a baccalaureate nursing curriculum, teaching and learning strategies and program policies that allow for a seamless transfer of students between the partner institutions. The equality in decision making and control of the program among partners contributes to its uniqueness. “This Program emphasizes our commitment to delivering quality education,” says Holmwood. “It provides the opportunity for our students to progress directly through to degree programs at our partner sites.” The College’s General Nursing Program offers the first five semesters of the Collaborative Nursing Program in BC. At the completion of these semesters, students transfer to either the University of Victoria or Kwantlen University College to complete the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. In addition to the ACCC award, Douglas College and its partners received another major recognition for its general nursing program quality in 2001. The Canadian Association of University Schools of Nursing granted a full seven-year accreditation to all of the partners in the collaborative nursing program in British Columbia. The other institutions involved in the Collaborative Nursing program are Camosun College, Kwantlen University College, Langara College, Malaspina University College, North Island College, Okanagan University College, Selkirk College, University College of the Cariboo and University of Victoria. Spoken communications network a success On May 11, 14 BC post- secondary instructors met at the College for an educational exchange on spoken communications. Instructors of oral presentations, intercultural communications and interpersonal skills discussed the nature of their work, common themes, instructional strategies, teaching resources and the challenges inherent in the curriculum and assessment of spoken communications. Participants from Malaspina University College, Capilano College, the College of New Caledonia and Kwantlen University College joined Douglas College instructors at the meeting. £ “The diversity of the departments was surprising,” says Communications instructor Lin Langley, one of the organizers of the meeting. “Those who attended came from Communications, Theatre, English, Business, Nursing, Sign Language Interpretation, Chairside Dental Assisting, ESL, Early Childhood Education and many of the departments from Child, Family and Community Studies. It was very useful to see the diversity of conditions under which people work” Based on the positive results of this meeting, Langley and others are forming an articulation committee on spoken communications.
