ORANGE SHIRT DAY EVERY CHILD MATTERS ORANGE SHIRT DAY IS A DAY TO HONOUR THE EXPERIENCES OF THOUSANDS OF INDIGENOUS RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL SURVIVORS. IT IS ALSO A TIME TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE DEATHS OF THE INDIGENOUS CHILDREN WHO DID NOT MAKE IT HOME FROM RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS. OVER 150,000 FIRST NATIONS, METIS & INUIT CHILDREN WERE FORCED TO ATTEND RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS BETWEEN THE YEARS OF 1831 AND 1996 (THAT WAS ONLY 25 YEARS AGO!). SEPT 30 DATE WAS CHOSEN, BECAUSE THIS WAS THE TIME OF YEAR THAT INDIGENOUS CHILDREN WERE FORCIBLY REMOVED FROM THEIR HOMES AND REQUIRED BY THE GOVERNMENT TO ATTEND RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS. IN 2021, THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA ANNOUNCED SEPTEMBER 30TH AS THE NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION.
