And what better way to celebrate clear skies and the warm evenings than finding a patch of the greenest grass you can find and curling up to an old (or new) favourite popcorn flick! Throughout the remainder of summer, all over the Lower Mainland ‘ 14 outdoor movie events will be popping up worse than teenage acne. FreshAirCinema is the organization putting on these stellar events and it’s their inflatable screens that provide you with the viewing pleasure. Though it hasn’t been for a lack of trying, I have never made it out to a drive-in movie theatre and until I miraculously inherit some long lost dead uncle’s fortune to cover the price of gas, these will have to do. The events even have the usual cinema-related goodies for sale at nearby tents for cheaper than your usual cinema-prices, but there’s no one stopping you from making your own popcorn at home and bringing it along too! One of the most admirable things about these events is the diversity that exists in the films being shown. I challenge any of you to take a look at the schedule for August and tell me there isn’t at least one title you would like to see. Ghostbusters, Jaws, The Goonies, E.T., Rio, The Muppets Movie and even Never Say Never (hey, they can’t all be good!) are just a few of the films coming to a park near you. For more information on what ones are playing where, mosey | on over to their Facebook page and check out their Events listings. The movies are all scheduled to start as soon as it gets dark enough, which usually lands around nine o’clock. If you’re feeling ambitious and crave good seating real estate, try and make it out an hour or so early. However, be warned that Vancity has a wonderful (bland) and informative (repetitive and probably irrelevant to your age group) demonstration before each screening which lasts between five or ten minutes, depending on your sense of time. Keep in mind too that these are family events so if you’re looking for a park to crack a six pack and talk obnoxiously till the PBR’s come home, this might not be the evening plans for you.
