I continue to be convinced that our particular approach to this area of activity has great long-term strength, even though on the Surface the College is less dominant in the affairs of the Centre than is the case with certain other modes of organization. On September 30th, the Council of Principals met at Malaspina College in Nanaimo for their regular bi-monthly meeting. Mr. Doug Jardine of Capilano College was elected Chairman of the group, thus allowing me to once again assume my role as past-Chairman on the Executive Committee. Mr. Jake McInnis of East Kootenay Community College is Vice-Chairman, and Mr. Peter Williams of Okanagan College, is Secretary. Internal Matters - Education A number of requests have been received from Victoria for proposals against sums of discretionary money. These include proposals for Matching Capital Grants, where the College has received gifts or donations; Locally Initiated Curriculum Development proposals; Excellence in Education proposals against next years funding; and "Post-Expo" program support proposals. The Administration has continued to follow the policy established last year in such circumstances - that is, we have used the existing planning documents of the College as our guidelines; any proposals have to be keyed to furthering plans already in existence; and all Proposals are made in terms of an existing list of approved program directions of the College. This has enabled us to handle the spate of requests for submission with reasonable smoothness, and dispatch. I would like to draw the Board's attention to the fact that this has involved a large number of faculty, staff and mid-managers, as well as the Deans and the Bursar. We have received a grant of roughly $50,000 in the name of the increased likely demand on College programs by people who previously have worked at Expo. The Board Members will be aware of the fact that the Minister of Post-Secondary Education, the Hon. Russell Fraser, has formalized work that has been ongoing for the past two months, regarding the establishment of more adequate facilities in Maple Ridge for College/School District operations on behalf of adult students. This announcement is in addition to the monies received in aid of the development of Maple Ridge programs that were included in the Excellence in Education grants of last Spring. Substantially, the College will be able to maintain and even expand services in Maple Ridge, in much more adequate teaching and learning conditions, without net cost to College operations.
