APPROVED BY PRINCLPAL'S COUNCIL February 14, 1978 Scheduled Instructional Time lost as a result of Statutory Holidays, Instructor Absence and/or College Closure The College has established a semester of 15 weeks (including final examinations) as the appropriate and feasible time within which its courses and programmes should be offered. However, even within this time period, there is a difference in the total number of scheduled class hours between day and evening classes. This disparity has been recognized since the inception of the College and has been academically rationalized to the satisfaction of all segments of the college community. However, because of statutory holidays, classes taught on certain days of the week, particularly Mondays, are subject to a further reduction in instructional time. Reductions also occur as a result of personnel development, instructor illness or other unavoidable absence and College closure re- sulting from adverse weather conditions. While the classes scheduled for two or more sessions per week do not appear to be seriously jeopardized by these factors, those classes scheduled to meet only once per week, particularly at night, can experience a considerable reduction in instructional time. As this problem has been raised by some faculty members for Principal's Council consideration, Principal's Council offers faculty the following solutions: i. Where instructors feel that the content of the approved course outline cannot be covered in the reduced time available, the instructor may: 3 a) schedule an additional class within the & semester. (Room bookings to be made res with the Campus Supervisor). &, GS SG s ’ wy b) extend the time allocated to the course & Qe by starting at an earlier hour and/or & & ending at a later hour (availability of SY space to be checked with Campus Super- & visor). Q c) teach on the regularly scheduled day (Statutory Holiday, Professional Dev- elopment, etc.) by prior arrangement with Campus Supervisors. to Where the instructor perceives no problems in covering the content of the approved course outline vithin the available instructional time, no action is requ. ed. Principal's Council feels these alternatives allow each instructor the flexibility to decide on the appropriate action for each section offered and does not legislate a solution when, in fact, there may be no problem. Principal's Council has also considered other solutions but feels that most would cause undesireable confusion or disruption. CONTINUED OVER
